Are you a journalist resident in Bayelsa State and passionate about accountability journalism, data, and impactful storytelling? Then this opportunity is for you!

Dataphyte Foundation, with support from the Ford Foundation through our Building Social Contract Infrastructure for Accountable and Inclusive Governance in Nigeria project, invites applications from journalists for our People-Centred Accountability Reporting Training in Bayelsa State.

The 2-day training will equip selected journalists with practical skills in data-driven and investigative accountability reporting, including using budget, procurement, audit, and project data to investigate public spending, track government projects, and report on service delivery. 20 journalists will be selected.

Dataphyte Foundation is pleased to collaborate with the DEAN Initiative on the EduAI Teachers’ Fellowship. Our Programme Manager, Abdulahi Adebayo will be facilitating the September learning sessions for the Fellowship.

The sessions will focuses on the use of AI for assessment, feedback and inclusive education, with an emphasis on evidence-driven teaching practices. Fellows will learn how AI can support educators in making informed decisions, improving learning experiences and promoting more inclusive classrooms, while maintaining the importance of professional judgement.

We are pleased to contribute to this effort in advancing responsible, ethical and effective use of AI in education.

2025 closed a five-year period of strong revenue growth for Bayelsa, with total revenue rising from ₦342.4 billion in 2021 to ₦1.237 trillion. But higher revenue on its own does not tell us whether life improved for people in the state. The more important question is what that money delivered: better roads, functioning health facilities, improved schools, reliable public services and stronger local infrastructure.

As Bayelsa state revenue increases, accountability should focus not only on how much revenue comes in, but on how effectively it is spent and whether the rise is producing visible improvements in the lives of residents.

For 2024 FY, Bayelsa state total revenue amounted to ₦1.09 trillion for the first time, an increase of 85.6% to the previous year, making the largest single-year jump recorded in this five-year review. Although 2024 was the first full year Nigeria operated under a floated exchange rate and a subsidy-free fuel market.

Federal allocation to Bayelsa State, inclusive of the 13% derivation as an oil-producing state, increased to ₦732.7 billion, amounting to 67.5% of the total revenue. The IGR triples to ₦85.3 billion, and VAT rose 87.5% to ₦61.7 billion. Loan reliance fell to 13.8%, the sharpest one-year drop in the period.

However, while there is a significant increase in the revenue, of what increase does it translate into measurable development for the people of Bayelsa?
