Holding the Nigerian Armed Forces Accountable for Accidental Airstrikes: Urgent Call for International Intervention on GAZAstrophic genocide by Nigerian Armed Forces
By Abdullahi Musa Yaro
Over the years, Nigeria has been plagued by numerous accidental airstrikes that have resulted in the loss of innocent lives and widespread devastation. These incidents, which are gross violations of human rights, demand immediate international attention and scrutiny. It is imperative for international human rights organizations, the United Nations, and the International Criminal Court to investigate these atrocities and ensure that those found guilty are duly sanctioned. Furthermore, we must question the effectiveness of previous investigations and demand a clear plan of action to guarantee that the recent promises made by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) will yield the required result.
The recent accidental bombing in a village, for which the Nigerian Army has taken responsibility, is yet another distressing example of the recurring tragedy. Lives were lost, families shattered, and a community torn apart. While the COAS, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has issued an apology to the victims' relatives, words alone cannot heal the wounds or bring back the deceased. It is time for substantial accountability and justice.
The incident at the Niger-Benue border stands as a stark reminder of the grave consequences of these accidental airstrikes. 37 individuals, including innocent pastoralists, lost their lives due to a bomb explosion. This tragedy must not be brushed aside or forgotten. The international community must stand in solidarity with the affected families and demand answers.
In the case of the Niger State bombing mishap, six innocent children paid the ultimate price for an airstrike allegedly targeting terrorists. This senseless loss of innocent lives simply cannot be ignored. We must ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions. The voices of these children, silenced forever, cry out for justice.
Similarly, the Katsina bomb blast, resulting in the injury of 13 residents and the loss of another life, serves as a grim reminder that accidental airstrikes continue to wreak havoc on communities. The immediate and long-term impacts on the lives of the survivors and their families cannot be overstated. They deserve justice and reassurance that preventive measures are in place to avoid such tragic incidents in the future.
The Borno bomb attacks in 2017 and 2020 demonstrate the repeated nature of the accidental airstrikes, despite the loss of innocent lives in previous incidents. The airstrike on an Internally Displaced Persons camp in Rann in 2017 claimed the lives of 52 individuals and left over 120 others injured. In 2020, the bombing of Sakotoku village took the lives of 17 people, including children. These incidents underline the urgent need for a comprehensive investigation and robust measures to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
We implore international human rights organizations to scrutinize these incidents thoroughly, ensuring that justice is served and those responsible are held accountable. The United Nations and the International Criminal Court must act swiftly to establish an impartial investigation into these atrocities. The Nigerian Armed Forces must be held to the highest standards of international law and human rights.
While the apology from the COAS is a step in the right direction, it is crucial to address the failures of previous investigations and ensure that promised actions deliver the expected results. The international community must demand transparency and reassurance that appropriate punitive actions will be taken against those found guilty. We cannot afford to let these tragic incidents go unquestioned or unresolved.
In conclusion, the Nigerian Armed Forces' accidental airstrikes have caused immense suffering, loss of life, and devastation within innocent communities. The international community must rally together and firmly condemn these acts of gross human rights violations. The call for international human rights organizations, the United Nations, and the International Criminal Court to conduct thorough investigations is a critical step towards justice and accountability. Lives lost can never be replaced, but we owe it to the victims and their families to ensure that such atrocities are prevented in the future. Let this be a turning point in holding the Nigerian Armed Forces accountable and safeguarding the lives and rights of innocent civilians.
