Risograph Revelations: Graphic Design Students Dive into Eco-Printing with Bang Bang Zine!
Year 1 Semester 1 and Year 2 Semester 4 Graphic Design Degree students attended the Risograph Printing Experience: Create Your Own Postcard workshop at Bang Bang Zine, located on the 8th floor of GMBB KL, on February 27, 2025 (Thursday, 1 PM – 2:30 PM). Co-founded by Mun Yeong, Chya Chyi, and Shermene, the studio provided an immersive space where students traded digital screens for hands-on creativity, exploring a process that blends retro charm with modern sustainability.
Mun Yeong and Chya Chyi introduced the risograph’s layered printing technique, guiding students in crafting illustrations adapted to its quirks. Using only fluorescent pink and blue inks, they watched their monochrome sketches transform into bold, two-color prints. Year 2 student Teng Jin Hoong was thrilled to see his anime character emerge in neon hues.
Beyond aesthetics, students discovered risograph’s eco-benefits. Chya Chyi explained how its rice bran oil-based inks promote sustainability, reinforcing the idea of responsible printing.
Exploring Bang Bang Zine’s pop-up shop afterward, students viewed risograph prints with newfound appreciation. “Before, I just thought they looked cool,” admitted one. “Now I see the textures, the layers—it’s like unlocking a secret language.”
For students accustomed to digital design, the workshop was a hands-on revelation. They embraced the imperfections, experimented with color theory, and left inspired by the art of risograph printing.
