- The nonce — “number used only once.” A nonce in blockchain is a whole number that’s randomly generated when a block is created, which then generates a block header hash.
- The hash — a hash in blockchain is a number permanently attached to the nonce. For Bitcoin hashes, these values must start with a huge number of zeroes (i.e., be extremely small).

When the first block of a chain is created, a nonce generates the cryptographic hash. The data in the block is considered signed and forever tied to the nonce and hash unless it is mined.

DogecoinDOGEUSD –2.10% prices tore higher Tuesday after Elon Musk’s Twitter made a Shiba Inu dog, the symbol of the meme cryptocurrency, the main logo for the social media platform’s homepage. There’s a rational bull case for the memecoin.

The price of Dogecoin has jumped 30% over the past 24 hours, spiking after Twitter replaced its iconic blue bird logo with a cartoon Shiba Inu dog. Dogecoin was outperforming BitcoinBTCUSD –0.69% and most other digital assets.

A so-called memecoin because it was created based largely on an internet joke, Dogecoin has long been hyped by Musk through tweets and on television. The crypto rallied after the Tesla TSLA –3.67% (ticker: TSLA) CEO took over Twitter last year amid hopes that the billionaire, who has said he owns Dogecoin, would incorporate the digital asset into a future payments solution on the social media platform.

While changing Twitter’s logo to Dogecoin is among the most material signals yet from Musk that memecoin dreams might become reality—it’s still just symbolic. But it’s still worth reviewing the bull case for Dogecoin and the pathway for the joke crypto to become much more.

Musk, who has dubbed himself the “Dogefather,” is a high-profile fan of crypto, having purchased Bitcoin for Tesla’s treasury and allowed payments in the token for some products. Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, also committed $500 million in equity financing to fund Musk’s takeover of Twitter last year.

After being hot for a good part of last year, the metaverse is, at least for now, facing a “cooldown moment,” said Cathy Hackl, chief metaverse officer at innovation and design consultancy Journey and a speaker at Consensus 2023.

“I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing,” Hackl told CoinDesk TV’s “First Mover” on Wednesday about those who got into the hype of the metaverse but have since left.

“A lot of us are continuing to build,” she said. The metaverse is a longer-term vision and one that she said is “going to be the future of the internet.” That’s despite brands deciding the metaverse is not for them. Most recently Disney shuttered its metaverse team as part of a company-wide contraction.

Catwalk in the metaverse
On Tuesday, the second annual Metaverse Fashion Week (MFW) kicked off. Unlike last year’s event, which took place only in Decentraland, this year’s event is a multi-platform affair. Spatial, a metaverse platform, and Over, an augmented reality (AR) platform that combines the use of virtual assets with the physical world, are among the collaborators.

Luxury brands including Dolce & Gabbana, Balmain and Tommy Hilfiger are also participating in the virtual four-day event, which Hackl said is making room for “opportunities to create virtual couture.”

She said the event opens the door for brands and participants to see forthcoming changes in culture and fashion.

But barriers persist, she said, adding that the need to have a virtual wallet may be keeping some users from getting the full experience. Additional stress points, including servers crashing, are among the technical issues developers are trying to iron out.

“If we see this next year, going into broader [platforms] like Roblox … or into Fortnite or some of these more mass market platforms, it’ll be more accessible,” Hackl said.
