Eight Years Between Green and Blue
Eight years ago, Hijau Biru Landscape Architecture was just one person, one table, and one belief —
that landscape architecture could change how we live with nature.
Founded in 2018 in Ipoh, Hijau Biru began as a small studio with a simple conviction: that landscape architecture could play a much larger role in shaping our cities, communities, and environment — not merely as decoration, but as infrastructure, ecology, and a framework for living with nature.
The name Hijau Biru carries this philosophy.
Hijau represents green infrastructure — biodiversity, planting systems, and living landscapes.
Biru represents water — rivers, wetlands, retention ponds, and blue systems that support resilience in our environments.
Between green and water lies the space where landscapes come to life.
The journey toward building Hijau Biru began long before the firm itself. Years of professional experience working across Malaysia, Singapore, and international projects helped shape a deeper understanding of landscape architecture and the possibilities of the profession.
Along the way, receiving the Young Landscape Architect Award at the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards became an important milestone that reinforced the decision to continue on this path.
But awards were never the destination.
The real motivation has always been the work — understanding landscapes, communities, and ecosystems, and translating them into meaningful places.
Between 2018 and 2020, the journey also took an unexpected but meaningful direction. During this time, we were actively involved in curation and placemaking initiatives for the tourism industry in Perak through Sama-Sama Perak. These experiences opened a different perspective on landscapes — reminding us that places are shaped not only by design, but also by stories, culture, and the identity of a community.
From a small home-based practice, Hijau Biru slowly grew through trust and collaboration. The early years were filled with small projects, learning experiences, and the challenge of building a landscape architecture practice in a city where the profession was still developing.
Then came the pandemic — a difficult time for many. But it also became a moment of reflection and renewal. As the industry gradually recovered, new opportunities emerged and the studio began to grow.
From working alone, Hijau Biru slowly grew into a team.
Today, the studio is supported by a passionate group of young landscape architects and designers who share the same curiosity about landscapes and the same belief in the power of nature in shaping our environments.
In 2025, the journey reached an important milestone when Hijau Biru was recognised as an Emerging Landscape Architecture Firm at the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards, and the studio also received its first MLAA Landscape Architecture Design Award. For a practice that began with a single desk in Ipoh, these recognitions mean a great deal.
Looking back, these eight years have been a journey of learning, patience, and growth. Building a landscape architecture practice is much like shaping a landscape itself — it takes time, care, and the belief that small beginnings can grow into something meaningful.
Building a landscape architecture practice in Ipoh has never been easy, but it has made the journey even more meaningful.
Behind these eight years are countless drawings, site visits, late nights, conversations, challenges, and breakthroughs. But more importantly, these years represent the trust and support of the people around us —
the team who believed in the vision,
the mentors who guided us,
the collaborators who worked alongside us,
and
the clients who trusted us.
As we celebrate Hijau Biru’s 8th anniversary, we remain committed to the same mission that started it all —
Designing Nature, Sustaining Future.
Where Hijau meets Biru, landscapes come to life.
Eight years, and the journey continues. 🌿💧
