I have been a resident on a street near Jalan Gurdwara, called Herriot Street, for over 20 years. In the past, I never actively looked into the history of the road I passed by every day, even though it surely holds countless stories worth sharing. It wasn’t until a friend who was organising an exhibition about Jalan Gurdwara invited me to join a heritage walk and create a zine that my memories of this place began to awaken. That is how the idea for this zine came to be—rooted in my personal connection with Jalan Gurdwara.
When I was a kid, I’d stay up late at night, riding an old-fashioned bicycle borrowed from a neighbour's grandmother. My neighbour and I would chase each other down the Road, weaving through the Seven Streets Precinct. Back then, there was hardly any traffic, so we naturally treated the streets as our giant playground. Looking back, we were quite a noisy bunch of kids, and we probably disturbed the neighbours' sleep. To anyone whose peaceful night we ruined back then, I sincerely apologise!
During my teenage years in secondary school, I was like any daydreaming, star-struck girl. Every week, I would walk over to the newspaper and Bao stall next to the Phu Thor Yen Temple to buy the famous entertainment magazine, Epop. While I was at it, I’d grab a piping hot bao and siew mai—they were so delicious! When I truly moved to another place, I counted my collection and realised I had over 300++ issues. At RM3 a copy, that added up to nearly RM1000, which was quite a huge expense for a student at that time. That magazine accompanied me through a sweet and youthful period of my life, though it's a pity I didn't keep t
