During the middle ages, when divorce was forbidden (according to German beliefs), they established a tradition to reduce it. It suggests having a fatal fight between the husband and the wife..
The man was placed in a hole where he had to fight his wife with one hand using a stick. On the other hand, the wife used to move freely in the hole holding a silky bag full of stones which she used to beat her husband. If the husband loses the fight, he will be sentenced to death, but if the wife loses the fight, she will be buried alive.
During the middle ages, Europe lived in dim darkness, while Muslim Arab civilisation was at its best prosperity.
