You are not always a bad communicator.

Sometimes, you are simply speaking to the wrong audience, in the wrong way, or at the wrong time.

Communication is not just about clarity,it is about understanding context, people, and timing.

The same message can be effective in one situation and completely misunderstood in another.

So before you doubt your ability to communicate, ask yourself:
Was it the message… or the approach?

At an intergenerational political dialogue held on Friday, April 17, one statement stood out to me.

Cllr. Gloria Musu Scott said: “A woman should go to school so she can have options.”

A powerful reminder that education is more than certificates. It creates choices, independence, confidence, and the ability to participate meaningfully in society.

When people have options, they are better positioned to make decisions, use their voices, and shape their futures.

Sometimes a single sentence can communicate a lifetime lesson.

We often think words are everything in communication. But Albert Mehrabian's research tells a different story.
When it comes to expressing feelings and attitudes ,especially when your words and emotions don't match, only 7% of the emotional meaning comes from the words themselves. 38% comes from your tone of voice. And 55% from your body language.
In other words, people feel what you mean before they hear it.
So when emotions are involved, how you say something will always speak louder than what you say.

Sometimes communication breaks down not because people refuse to understand, but because the words used create confusion.
In communication studies, this is called Semantic Noise — interference that occurs when language distorts meaning. It can happen when people use jargon, unfamiliar terms, slang, or expressions that the receiver interprets differently.
When language is unclear or too complex, the message may be sent successfully, yet the intended meaning is lost.
Effective communicators understand that clarity is power. Choosing simple, precise, and audience-appropriate language helps ensure that meaning is shared, not distorted.
The visual below illustrates how language can complicate communication when clarity is missing.

Communication shapes the way we connect — online and offline.
My recent digital journalism assignment on “The Impact of Social Media on Real-World Connection” was featured on our school radio’s social media page.
This work explores how digital platforms can both bridge and widen gaps in human interaction.
At Adna’s Communication Desk, we study, analyze, and teach communication so you can understand its power and use it intentionally.
Watch, learn, and reflect: How does social media affect your real-world connections?

“Today on Adna’s Communication Desk, we look at another type of noise in communication: Physiological Noise.”

What does it mean??

“Physiological noise refers to biological or physical conditions in the body that interfere with communication.”

Examples:

“This could include the following:
fatigue
, illness,
hearing difficulties,
speech impairments,
headaches
, or even hunger.”

How do we explain this? Ok, here's how!!👇🏽👇🏽

“When the body is not functioning at its best, it can affect how a person sends, receives, or interprets messages.”

Key Point
“So sometimes the communication breakdown is not about the message or emotions, but about physical limitations affecting the communicators.”

“This reminds us that effective communication also depends on physical well-being and awareness of others’ conditions.”

Sometimes communication breaks down not because of what was said, but because of what someone is feeling or thinking.

A customer reaches out to a business asking for information — often because they are interested in making a purchase.
But instead of receiving the information immediately, the response is: “We will get back to you within the next hour.”
While automated replies acknowledge the message, they do not always meet the immediacy of customer intent. When someone asks for prices, directions, or availability, they are usually ready to act.
In digital communication, responsiveness is not just politeness — it is part of customer experience and brand reputation.
For business owners, brand managers, and social media managers: your inbox is often the first point of interaction with a potential customer.
Handle it with the same urgency you would give a customer standing at your counter.
