STUDYING COMPUTER SCIENCE DOES NOT MAKE YOU A SOFTWARE ENGINEER
Someone studies Computer Science at the Federal University of Technology Owerri or Obafemi Awolowo University.
They learn:
• Programming fundamentals
• Data structures
• Algorithms
• Operating systems
• Databases
They graduate with B.Sc. Computer Science.
Solid achievement.
But that alone does NOT automatically make them a software engineer.
To function as a real software engineer, the person must:
• Build real-world applications
• Work on production systems
• Collaborate in engineering teams
• Write scalable, maintainable code
• Understand version control, testing, deployment
Some may work at companies like Andela or Flutterwave — where they are solving real technical problems daily.
Without practical projects, industry experience, or demonstrable skills:
You are a Computer Science graduate.
Not automatically a software engineer.
That your friend that says,
“I studied Computer Science, I’m a tech bro.”
Ask politely:
“What have you built?”
Because in tech:
Degree is theory.
Engineering is application.
Two different things again.
