🐦🦤🦆 Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary is one of Sri Lanka’s oldest bird sanctuaries, established as a protected wetland reserve in 1984. Located near Tangalle, it is a biodiversity hotspot comprising brackish lagoons, mangrove swamps, saltwater marshes, and scrublands.
🦤 Key Highlights & Features
Rich Avian Diversity: The sanctuary is home to over 150 species of birds, including around 50 migratory species that visit during the northern winter. Common sightings include open-billed storks, pelicans, egrets, herons, waterhens, and various species of ducks and waders.
Other Wildlife: Apart from birds, the ecosystem supports over 20 species of mammals (such as toque macaques, langurs, and jackals), around 38 species of reptiles, and 41 species of fish.
Eco-Friendly Boat Safaris: To protect the delicate wetland ecosystem, motorboats are restricted. Visitors explore the lagoon via quiet, hand-paddled rafts or traditional wooden canoes, making for a serene and non-intrusive wildlife viewing experience.
🦤 Visitor Tips & Best Time to Visit
Best Time for Birdwatching: The ideal times for boat tours are early morning (around 6:00 AM) or late afternoon (around 3:30 PM to 4:00 PM), when birds are most active and the lighting is best.
Migratory Season: While resident birds can be seen year-round, the peak season for migratory species runs from November to March.
Essentials: Bring binoculars, a camera with a zoom lens, sun protection, and insect repellent.
📌️ Location
The sanctuary is located near the village of Hungama, roughly 24 kilometers (about a 30- to 35-minute drive) east of Tangalle town.
