The granted flagship E-100 is a real present to music lovers, who sadly look at graceful ranges of subtle floor speaker systems. A 120-liters body has three branded heads with two-layered cellulose-polymer PolyPlas diffusers and the tweeter with a dome made of titanium laminate. The sight is immediately arrested by a pair of 250-mm woofers, supported by a front bass-reflex port - that's where the power.

What a well executed product Rotel’s 2005 RSS-900 is. Connect it to virtually any amplifier (with a maximum rating of 200 watts) and it will allow you to drive your main speakers (switchable via the “direct” switch) plus up to five additional speaker zones all at once, in any combination.

Usually, you can only drive a maximum of two speaker zones from a Hi Fi amplifier. (eg. Two lots of 8Ω speakers on an amplifier that can drive down to 4Ω), and trying to drive more will cause amplifier damage. The RSS-900 answers the dilemma faced by many audiophiles who want the flexibility and convenience of a multi-speaker, multiroom system without having to sacrifice sound quality.

The RSS-900 provides a switchable set of “Direct” speaker connections to ensure the speakers in the primary listening location receive an unaltered signal. In addition, five other switchable sets of connections are provided. These outputs have impedance compensation that allows any combination of speakers, or all the speakers, to be switched on.

The unit also has built in inductor coils for the additional zones to counteract the effects of excess capacitance that can result from long, multiple runs of speaker wires. This additional circuitry ensures that your amplifier will produce the best possible sound, regardless of which speakers are switched on.

The RSS-900 is straightforward in its installation and operation. If you have experience with other stereo systems, you shouldn’t find anything perplexing. Simply connect the associated components and enjoy.

Maximum input left and right channels – 200 watts rms
Measures 430mm x 210mm x 75mm
Connections via combo binding post / banana jack

Wharfedale have managed to produce a floorstanding speaker for under ÂŁ500 that is a true three-way system, using a specially designed 5cm fabric diaphragm midrange driver. These are features usually reserved for speakers that cost three or four times as much.

The 10.5s share many design features found throughout Wharfedale's Diamond range. They feature a curved, reinforced cabinet for increased rigidity.

They also use a 16,5cm Kevlar bass driver, which features an interesting diamond pattern, designed to reduce and dampen the effects of standing waves.

Seamless Sound Integration The 2,5cm soft dome tweeter is prevalent throughout the Diamond range and sits beneath a metal diffusion grille to protect the unit and encourage a smoother, more detailed sound.

Spin a few songs, and any concerns about integration are quickly put aside. The sound from each driver is seamlessly blended, and you're greeted by a wide, expansive, and extremely solid soundstage.

Playing Charlotte Gainsbourg's In The End, the combination of strings, percussion and delicate vocals is presented clearly and precisely.

With Prince's When Doves Cry, the Wharfedales impress with powerful, tight and well-defined bass. The speakers remain composed and controlled at high volume and maintain their unshakable grip with all genres of music.
