Some months back I had a request to do a painting. The clients family had held a heirloom of a Kodithuwakku lekam flag and a matchlock gun that had been received by one of his ancestors. During the recent times the artifacts had got lost or destroyed and only the knowledge of the gift remained. We discussed about doing a painting that would depict the original Kodithuwakku flag as a main element in memory of the family heirloom lost. But there was a problem. There was no apparent references to the design of the Kodithuwakku flag apart from the knowledge that it contained an image of a Kodithuwakkuwa.

The “Grass hopper or Jinghal” a light/ medium weight man portable canon known as the “Kodithuwakkuwa” in Sinhala had seen action in many of the early wars against European invaders Along with an arsenal of Battlefield artillery fielded by the likes of King Rajasinghe I of Sithawaka. but as the battle fields shifted to the Hill country where the narrow passes and forested hill terrain prevented effective use of larger guns the Kodithuwakkuwa became a force to recon in the Guerilla type battles and helped prevent 3 European super powers from effectively commanding the hill capital for near 3 centuries.

The Kodithuwakku men under the Kodithuwakku Lekam flag is said to have held an important position in the command of the Kings army. Yet for a long time there was no image of the Kodithuwakku Flag apart from literary references. A glimpse to the actual flag was found in a watercolor frieze of a temple procession painted in the 19th Century which was on display at an exhibition organized by the British council some years back which depicted a triangular flag with a blue border and the iconic symbol of the Kodithuwakkuwa being carried by a unit of men carrying Kodithuwakku guns in procession. This painting re-establishes the design of the Flag of the Kodithuwakku men based on a good reference.

Painting currently in the Collection of Mr. Chaturanga Bandaranayaka, (Australia)

(The Original reference is included in the Comments.)
