Trinidadian playwright Mustapha Matura’s play Rum and Coca Cola is a dark comedy that unwittingly compels the audience to consider two points of view; one of a cynical former Calypso champion who insists on holding onto tradition and the other is that of a naïve youth desperate to make something of himself by leaving the island for the United States. Rum and Coca Cola probes the issues of cultural
identity in the face of change and the role of traditional art, specifically Calypso, in preserving our collective national memory. Cast:
