이윤숙
2021, 측백나무, 가변설치
이윤숙은 측백나무 설치로 2015년 예술공간봄부터 2017년 실험공간UZ, 2018년 고색뉴지엄, 그리고 이번 전시에 이르기까지 수원의 다양한 공간을 변주해왔다. 교외 작업실에서 측백나무를 간벌해 전시장 바닥에 세우는 작업은 먼저 세상을 떠난 동료들을 추모하고, 오늘날 사회적 위기 가운데 시민들의 지친 마음을 위로하는 의식이다. 상처를 보듬는 그의 재생(再生) 작업은 측백나무의 짙은 향과 교차하며, 그가 2005년부터 2019년까지 비영리전시공간 ‘대안공간 눈’을 운영하고, 행궁동 벽화골목 조성 등 다수의 공공미술프로젝트를 지속적으로 기획하는 활동과 같은 뿌리에서 자라났다. 위 작업들은 제각각 내용과 형태가 다르지만, 이 시대에 손상된 관계들을 회복하여 도시를 건강한 ‘생태계’로 만들려는 공공의 실천과 이어져 있다.

Lee Younsook has been transforming various spaces in Suwon with her arborvitae installation, which has been presented in Bom in 2015, Experimental Space UZ in 2017, Gosaeknewseum in 2018, and the current exhibition. The work of thinning arborvitae trees in her workshop outside the city and erecting them on the floor of the exhibition space is a ceremony to commemorate the colleagues that left the world before her and comfort the exhausted minds of citizens who live amid today’s social crisis. Her work of regeneration to heal wounds intersects with the thick scent of arborvitae trees, which shares the same root with her work of running a non-profit art space ‘Alternative Space Noon’ and consistently organizing a number of public art projects such as the creation of Haenggung-dong mural street. Although her practice takes different contents and forms, they are all connected with the practice of publicness to restore damaged relationships in our time and make the city a sound ‘ecosystem.’
