Many people compare solar panels based on wattage alone. But did you know that two 500W panels can perform differently in the real world? Before you buy your next solar panel, here are 4 things you should know about half-cut and full-cell solar panels.

1️⃣ A 500W panel is still a 500W panel
Whether it's a half-cut or full-cell panel, both are designed to produce 500W under standard test conditions.
The real difference is how they perform when conditions aren't perfect.

2️⃣ A half-cut panel is like having two panels in one
A half-cut panel is divided into two separate sections, almost like two smaller solar panels connected in parallel inside one frame.
This design reduces power loss and helps the panel work more efficiently.

3️⃣ Half-cut panels perform better under partial shading
If one side of the panel is shaded by a tree, pole, or something else. the other side can still keep producing power.
A full-cell panel usually loses more output under the same shading conditions.

4️⃣ Half-cut panels run cooler
Each half-cell carries less current, so less heat is generated.
Less heat means lower energy losses, better performance on hot days, and improved long-term reliability.

If the price difference is small, I'd choose a half-cut panel. It still has the same 500W rating, but it usually delivers better real-world performance, especially in hot weather or when part of the panel is shaded.
