Former Cabinet Minister and former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo has died following a fatal road accident, according to reports.
Sources indicate that the former KANU heavyweight died on the spot after his vehicle was involved in a crash with a 45-seater passenger bus along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway. The accident occurred at around 3 am on Saturday while he was driving back to his home in Lugari.
Jirongo, 64, served as Minister for Rural Development during the administration of Kenya’s second President, Daniel arap Moi, holding the position from March 2002 until December the same year.
He was also elected Member of Parliament for Lugari Constituency between 1997 and 2002 and later served a second term from 2007 to 2013.
In the 2022 General Election, Jirongo unsuccessfully vied for the Kakamega gubernatorial seat on a United Democratic Party (UDP) ticket, losing to Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate Fernandes Barasa.
