Size and nesting can tell you two things a bar chart never will.

This is a circle packing chart, every circle's size represents its share of a whole, and circles cluster together based on relationships in the data. It's built for exactly one job: showing scale and grouping at the same time, in a single glance.

Compare it to a treemap, which does something similar with rectangles. What circle packing does differently is give dense datasets a shape that feels less like a spreadsheet and more like a picture, a cluster of bubbles you can scan intuitively, where the biggest circles pull your eye first without needing a single label.

That's the real power of choosing the right chart type: the structure itself can carry meaning before anyone reads a number.

Mapping Eswatini's Revenue Flows to National Income

This is Eswatini's government revenue, visualized as flows rather than a table of numbers.
A Sankey diagram works well here because the width of each band is proportional to its share of total income so you see the full picture at a glance instead of comparing figures line by line. One look shows exactly how SACU (Southern African Customs Union receipts), PAYE, VAT, Corporate Tax, Borrowings, Grants and Other each contribute to the country's income.
That's the real value of good data visualization: it doesn't just display numbers, it makes the composition of something as complex as a national budget instantly readable.

Uganda's UGX 52.74 trillion national budget for FY2023/24 represents more than an annual appropriation, it is a declaration of national priorities, revealing exactly where a government chooses to invest in its people and its future.
This visualization traces how that budget flows outward from a single point of origin into the sectors and institutions that shape everyday life in Uganda: education, health, infrastructure, security and beyond, exposing the true weight each sector carries within the nation's spending story.

Where does Eswatini's budget actually go?

Eswatini's 2024/25 National Budget ("Nkwe for Growth") is a lot of numbers to sit through, so we broke it down into two visual formats to make the allocation easier to read at a glance.

① Sankey diagram — traces how the total budget flows from source into sectors: Education, Health, Agriculture, Defence, Police, Public Works & Transport and more. Follow the ribbons and you can literally see where every emalangeni goes.
② Treemap — same dataset, different lens. Box size = share of total spend, so scale is instant. Education and Health dominate the visual — together accounting for 29% of the total budget, roughly three times the combined share for Defence and Police (9%).

This is exactly why chart choice matters: the Sankey shows flow and relationship, the treemap shows proportion at a glance. Same numbers, two different stories, pick the lens that fits the question you're asking.

This case study looks at Botswana’s trade data through two different approaches to visualization.

The original visuals present detailed information about trade flows and the composition of exports and imports. They contain valuable data, but understanding the bigger picture requires the audience to decode multiple elements at once.

The redesigned visuals take the same information and focus on making the key message easier to see, highlighting the major trading partners, the most significant export and import categories and the relative importance of each.

This is particularly important when communicating with non-data-literate audiences.

Good data visualisation is not simply about making a chart more attractive. It is about reducing the effort needed to understand the information without losing its meaning.
