Today, we celebrate the girls who chose this space. Who showed up, stayed, and kept pushing, even when it wasn’t built with them in mind.

The ones building, innovating, and opening doors for others to walk through.

Because every girl in ICT today is doing more than just participating, she’s expanding what’s possible for the next one.

And to every girl watching from the sidelines, wondering if you belong here, you do.

This space is yours too.
Not someday. Now. 💻✨

As digital spaces become more central to civic life, the conversation around safety, rights, and accountability online is more urgent than ever.

ICON Data and Learning Labs (IDL) participated in a knowledge exchange session hosted by Internews in partnership with Amnesty International Kenya under the Ken Safe Space Project, contributing to discussions on digital rights and online safety.

Key conversations focused on Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV), its growing impact both online and offline, and how often digital harm goes unrecognized or normalized. The session also explored information disorder, misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation, especially in the context of upcoming elections.

Constitutional protections such as Article 31 on the right to privacy were highlighted alongside emerging concerns like cyberbullying, doxxing, and non-consensual content sharing, reflecting the evolving nature of online harm.

As these conversations continue to evolve, IDL Africa remains actively engaged in shaping a rights-based digital ecosystem that prioritizes safety, accountability, and informed participation for all.

ICON Data and Learning Labs(IDL) hosted partner organizations and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) at our HQ in Kisumu, Western Kenya for an in-depth exploration of AI, its real-world applications, ethical challenges, and the frameworks guiding responsible use.

The training went beyond “what AI can do” to examine how it should be done, sparking conversations around accountability, equity, and the role of technology in social development and governance. Participants left with practical tools and insights to implement AI thoughtfully and responsibly in their own work.

The training content adapted from the datadotorg mainstream 'Ethical AI in Practice' course proved engaging with participants resonating with specific features and design flow such as evaluating the benefits and threats of AI in business development.

IDL intends to continue a series of iterations ensuring a transfromative AI course content that speaks to the challenges of the small businesses and grassroots organizations we work with.

Who is missing from the story?

Every day, decisions about schools, healthcare, jobs, and public services are shaped by data. But what happens when some people are not counted?

When persons with disabilities are left out of data, their needs can be overlooked, their voices unheard, and their opportunities limited. This leads to programs and policies that don’t fully include them, keeping them on the margins of a society they are part of.

This , we’re highlighting the power of data inclusion.

At ICON Data and Learning Labs (IDL), we work with Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) under the Lake Region OPDs Hub to collect and use evidence-based data. Because when people are counted, they are seen, heard, and included.

Data is more than numbers.
It represents lives, dreams, and potential.

Every missing data point is a missed chance for fairness, dignity, and justice.

Let’s change that together.
Join us in advocating for inclusive data systems that leave no one behind.

What does it take to build an award-winning approach to data protection at the community level?

provides one answer.

Recognized with the Data Protection Award by the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner(ODPC), the initiative has demonstrated that locally led digital rights awareness can translate into real impact, strengthening how communities understand, use, and protect their data.

Now, is expanding this proven model to Busia, Bungoma, and Kakamega counties, working with CSOs ready to take on a more active role in data governance, advocacy, and community protection.

If your organization is ready to be part of an award-winning movement shaping the future of digital rights in Kenya, this is your moment.

Day two at the Conference 2026 opened with a powerful reminder from Dr. Melissa Omino that before every dataset, there is a community.

At ICON Data and Learning Labs (IDL), this idea sits at the core of our work, which is why today we are hosting a panel discussion on “Promoting Locally Led Awareness on Digital Rights and Data Protection in Western Kenya,” drawing insights from the project.

Through this initiative, we have been working with communities to simplify conversations around digital rights and data protection, translating complex policy issues into relatable messages through community dialogues and locally led awareness efforts.

The lesson is clear: effective data governance begins when communities understand their data, question how it is used, and actively engage in conversations about their digital rights.

Collaboration is not just a buzzword in the data ecosystem, it is the foundation of meaningful impact.

At the Conference, the CEO of the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data, Jenna Slotin reminded us that the future of responsible data governance depends on strong partnerships across governments, civil society, academia, private sector and the community.

This message resonated deeply with our experience as a data partner in the Data Science Approaches for Ecological Farming initiative. Through collaboration with farmers, researchers, and local stakeholders, what began as a baseline survey with 510 farmers in Ahero has grown into a national initiative leveraging GIS and data science to strengthen climate resilience, nutrition, and farmer livelihoods across Kenya.

Moments like these remind us that data becomes truly powerful when it is shared, contextualized, and co-created with the communities it serves.

As we look ahead to the Global Data Festival 2026, which will be hosted in Kenya, the call is clear:

Let’s collaborate, innovate, and build stronger data ecosystems together.
