Always look for inclement weather.
Rain, storm, snow; get out there and shoot.
The environmental factor adds a whole other dimension to the image.
To put it simply: stay out in the weather everyone else drives away from.
Try to shoot at eye level to give a sense of the animal’s size and presence.
And for shots in the rain, move around to find a dark background and use a fast shutter speed to freeze the falling droplets.
Mostly patience, I was just waiting for him to put on a show.
This is Nzuri, one of the males from the Marsh Pride.
He was napping alongside four other male lions, and we were struck by his mane the moment we saw him - the way it fell was something else, and it was the first time we'd taken portrait shots of him.
Since it was raining, we were hoping he'd get up and shake it off.
So we sat there, watching him through the viewfinder, waiting for any bit of action.
After a solid hour and a half, he finally stood and showed off that gorgeous mane, and I was lucky to be in the moment for it.
Always give animals their space - that's when the magic happens.
Go out more often, and stay out as long as you can.
The more time you spend in nature with the camera up, the more chances you have of witnessing moments like this one.
いつも悪天候を探しましょう。
雨、嵐、雪——それでも外に出て撮影するのです。
環境的な要素が、写真にまったく別の次元を加えてくれます。
簡単に言えば、みんなが車で立ち去るような天候の中に、あえて留まり続けるということです。
目線の高さで撮影するようにしましょう。
動物の大きさと存在感が伝わります。
そして雨の中での撮影では、動き回って暗い背景を見つけ、速いシャッタースピードを使って落ちる雨粒を止めましょう。
ほとんどは忍耐でした。
彼がショーを見せてくれるのをただ待っていたのです。
これはマーシュ・プライドのオスの一頭、ンズリです。
彼は他の4頭のオスライオンと一緒に昼寝をしていました。
彼のたてがみに私たちは心を奪われました——その垂れ方が本当に特別で、ポートレートショットを撮るのはこれが初めてでした。
雨が降っていたので、彼が起き上がって水を振り払ってくれることを期待していました。
そうして私たちはそこに座り、ファインダー越しに彼を見つめながら、何か動きがあるのを待ち続けました。
1時間半ほど経ったころ、彼はついに立ち上がり、あの見事なたてがみを見せてくれました。
その瞬間に立ち会えたのは幸運でした。
動物にはいつも十分な距離を与えましょう——それこそが、マジックが起こる瞬間です。
もっと頻繁に、そしてできるだけ長く外に出ましょう。
カメラを構えて自然の中で過ごす時間が長ければ長いほど、こうした瞬間に出会えるチャンスも増えていきます。
