Dusting off my French to share some insights (hopefully) on France Culture about the outlook for the Chinese economy in the run up to the APEC summit in San Francisco and the meeting next week between Xi Jinping and Joe Biden.

Appreciate the opportunity to discuss this topic on Christine Ockrent's excellent weekly radio program in the company of four distinguished commentators.

Lots of challenges domestic and foreign for both the U.S. and China.

Today 11.11 is "Singles Day" in China but the mood for consumers and the big Internet platforms here is pretty subdued. The threat of deflation looms along with the knock-on effects of the real estate crisis, a depressed stock market before even talking about the drop in FDI just recorded and all the external pressures from chip wars and the decoupling/derisking dynamics.

Hopefully a floor can be found rather than a trapdoor to a basement staircase to even worse US-China relations.

The costs of a further deterioration are clear. Finding a balance between security and economic growth is the name of the game. Easier said than done! But the world could do with a little less drama these days for sure.

PODCAST. L'émission Affaires étrangères par Christine Ockrent est en replay sur France Culture. Les meilleurs experts nous racontent le monde qui change.
