🇯🇵 This weekend, Japan will have its first 3-day weekend in 10 weeks!🌊
Next Monday, July 21st, is a national holiday in Japan: “Marine Day” (Umi no Hi).
Marine Day is celebrated on the third Monday of July every year.
It’s a day to appreciate the ocean, to recognize that Japan is a country surrounded by the sea, and to hope for the future of Japan as a maritime nation.
🌊 What is Marine Day?
The origin of Marine Day goes back to 1876, when Emperor Meiji traveled around the Tohoku region on the lighthouse inspection ship Meiji-maru.
He returned to Yokohama Port on July 20th.
This day became known as “Marine Memorial Day,” and later in 1995, it became an official national holiday.
Since 2003, it has been celebrated on the third Monday of July as part of the “Happy Monday” system.
🎉 How do people celebrate Marine Day?
Many people enjoy the long weekend with beach trips, marine sports, and family outings.
There are also fun events held in Tokyo and Kobe!
📍Tokyo: “Festival of the Sea”
• Public tours of rare ships like the survey vessel “Koyo” and a car carrier ship
• Performances by the Japan Coast Guard Band and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Band
• Visitors who answer a survey at the venue can win prizes like round-trip ferry tickets to the Izu Islands or a dinner cruise! 🎁
📍Kobe: “Kobe Love Port Minato Festival” at Meriken Park
• Live music and talk shows by famous artists
• Sports and marine activities, and a fun water splash festival—perfect for summer!
🏖 Other popular ways to enjoy Marine Day:
• Swimming, beach camping, and snorkeling
• Visiting aquariums or marine museums
• Eating fresh and delicious seafood dishes with gratitude to the ocean
☀️ Be careful of the summer heat. Don’t forget your hat, sunscreen, and water to stay safe!
🌱 A day to protect the ocean, too
Marine Day is not just about fun—it’s also a day to think about protecting our oceans for the future.
Some areas will hold beach clean-up events where you can help remove trash from the coast.
Let’s enjoy the sea—and take care of it at the same time 🌎💙
