Each file is authenticated and date-stamped so that it can be used as evidence in court without having to be reformatted, avoiding the need for officers to take the phone, and saving police an average of eight hours per case.
As well as r**e and domestic abuse, the technology has also been used in investigations of crimes such as stalking, harassment, theft, shoplifting, assaults and anti-social behaviour.
The technology, invented by Kulpa, a British start-up firm, and approved by the Home Office, has doubled conviction rates by improving and speeding up the collection of the hashtag hashtag which is often critical to bringing a successful prosecution.
