Is LinkedIn becoming useless? 😱
Is Microsoft killing the user experience for the sake of advertising and profiling?

LinkedIn is not what it used to be.
𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲. 𝗪𝗔𝗬 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲.
Way less useful.
It's become annoying and frustrating for most of us.

I used to enjoy reading information shared by my network contacts and engage in fruitful conversations with them.

It also helped me understand who were the main voices in my industry and field of expertise, as the algorithm prioritised relevant topics I was already talking about.

Now?

💀 Sponsored posts all over the place
🤑 Intrusive messages and/or banners in my message inbox.
👾 Suggested posts from paying users showing up on top of my feed
💩 Irrelevant ads in my feed every 3-4 posts
👨‍👨‍👧‍👧 Way too many Group posts instead of contributions from my direct contacts
🙄 Viral posts on politics, feel-good corporate stuff, and clickbait entirely unrelated to work matters
😷 A ridiculous amount of AI-related posts (now that the crypto and NFT topics are mercifully dead and buried)
🌾 And, obviously, this is the perfect soil to grow fake profiles, scams, ghost job offers, and the like.

I guess Microsoft is desperately trying to push their agenda so hard that they stopped caring about user experience.

And every month there's a bunch of updates that add another layer of nuisance to the experience.

𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀?
I DON'T WANT TO PLAY WHILE I'M TRYING TO TALK BUSINESS.

The worst part?

There is little users can do about it. 😣
There are a few scattered options in your account settings to choose your poison. Sure.

But you cannot disable most of the unwelcome features that constantly drive your attention away from the conversations within your network that should be the main focus while you browse.

Even for Premium users!

Busy days require careful planning!

Are you enjoying some peaceful weeks, or is your agenda insanely packed? 😱

My July is turning out to be way more lively than expected in terms of workload.

Many clients and projects that were typically quiet this time of the year have woken up and decided to go full-throttle, with an unprecedented surge in the volume of requests 🫠

Some other clients are new and have an ambitious pipeline for the upcoming weeks —partly announced, partly unpredictable.

As I love what I do and love to keep everyone as happy as possible, it is essential that I set up a detailed workflow to schedule every individual request and avoid mixing up deadlines, team roles, and priorities.

What are your favourite tools to organize your workload?

Currently, I use:

💡𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞 and 𝐎𝐛𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧 to jot down ideas and meeting notes.

🧵𝐒𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 and 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐨𝐟𝐭 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬 for team discussions and file sharing

🎥 𝐙𝐨𝐨𝐦, 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭, and 𝐌𝐒 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬 for meetings (although I would love to see more people using the open-source alternative 𝐉𝐢𝐭𝐬𝐢)

📅 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐔𝐩 and 𝐀𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐚 for project planning and task assignment

And yes, 𝑷𝑬𝑵 𝑨𝑵𝑫 𝑷𝑨𝑷𝑬𝑹 for everyday notetaking, inspiration, and fleshing out presentations and personal/business projects on the go.

Still my tool of choice.
Still the most effective and enjoyable tool to use.

Dear tech providers:

The fine people making a living (or trying to) in the language industry do not need YET another biased based on irrelevant parameters that show the unbelievable performance of XYZ in YET another useless comparison against similar 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥-𝐟𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬.

I am beyond exhaustion:

Every time I open LinkedIn, Slator, Multilingual, or any language technology news page or group, I find myself dodging dozens or articles spitting out the same bland statements about Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT, DeepSeek or any fashionably New Entry of The Week Nobody Will Talk About Next Week.

News and conversations have become a mine field where the room dedicated to topics unrelated to is shrinking before my eyes.

And it is BORING.
SO BORING.

🤖 We need real players explaining where all this tech can be used effectively ✅, where it can be ditched as a piece of overhyped junk 🤮, and when it's safe to completely ignore the conversation ⛷ and focus on actual work and real clients, rather than keep talking about high-level productivity gains and big-time impact that is mostly irrelevant for human-sized companies and most freelancers.

I wish more of us could speak out and say that never was and never will be a priority in our everyday work and lives, no matter what hardcore evangelists keep saying 24/7.

The 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 of the global scope for AI is taking much longer than expected in spite of the hard data showing how wrong the initial adoption and usage forecasts were.

And I believe that if we want less AI in our everyday lives, we need to start talking LESS about AI.

I want to be back to a time where it was exciting to open LinkedIn and check a myriad diverse topics to choose from.

And even suggest your own topics without feeling forced (like me in this very post) to use the hashtags to draw your ever dimming attention.

New York's Department of City Planning has launched a fascinating interactive tool to check the languages spoken in each borough, with particular attention to citizens with Limited English Proficiency (LEP.)

To no one's surprise, and are the most widely spoken, but the number of languages and non-English speakers is truly astonishing.

NYC has truly earned its nickname "The Melting Pot". 🍲

A ver, mediosdecomunicasión, que no será porque no lo hemos dicho veces…

1 million = 1 millón (todo bien hasta ahí) → 6 ceros
1 billion = 1000 millones → 9 ceros
1 trillion = 1 billón → 12 ceros
1 quadrillion = 1000 billones → 15 ceros
1 quintillion = 1 trillón → 18 ceros

Para el anglicismo «trillionaire», se recomienda usar en español «billonario», mejor que «trillonario», señala la FundéuRAE.

Are translators losing their skills? ☠☠

Even if you cannot stop the disempowerment of language users due to the massive exposure to machine translation and AI's sloppy output, there is something you can do as a translator (and as a speaker) to preserve your skills.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐭.

READ.
Read a lot.

Read the classics. ✒
Read adventure books. ⚔
Read drama. 😲
Read poetry. 🎨
Read essays. 🥎
Read horror. 😱
Read web content, but also printed content. 📜
Read different genres.

Read LONG books with intricate patterns ans layers, not just attention-grabbing quickies.

By different authors using different writing styles, so you can absorb multiple ways of expressing, conveying ideas. Thoughts. Intention.

Machines oversimplify. It's in their silicon nature.

Regardless of the many flashy sales statements you hear every day, machines do not understand.
They just process information using a very basic set of rules.
Basic? 𝘞𝘦𝘭𝘭, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘹 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵—

𝐘𝐞𝐬, 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐜.
If compared to the human brain and the zillion shades of grey (matter) involved in every decision made to choose the right word, the right nuance, the right tone, machines use simple processes.

Machines oversimplify because that’s the only way to mimic understanding. Any developer can confirm this.

So how do you counter this downward spiral and keep your cultural & language skills?

Build back your language muscle. 🦾
Reconquer your ability to choose among infinite options. 🔀
Reclaim your ability to stand out from the average in the AI era. 😎

This, and your ability to make educated decisions.
These are the two key factors that will ensure you survival (and success) in tomorrow's market.

And, incidentally, make your work more enjoyable and fulfilling.
