🔧 Technical Challenge in Electrical Motor Insulation: Solution-Oriented Approach

At RaibodTechnologies, a manufacturer of silicone tape insulation, we are committed not only to delivering quality products but also to providing ongoing technical support to our clients.

Recently, one of our customers encountered a challenge during the insulation of electric motors. In this application, two layers of insulation tape are typically applied. However, the second layer failed to adhere properly to the first, due to insufficient bonding between the fiberglass surface of the
first layer and the silicone surface of the second.

💡 To resolve this issue, we proposed two technical solutions:

✔️ Application of a specialized primer on the fiberglass surface to enhance interlayer adhesion.
✔️ Introduction of a revised thermal curing cycle to improve bonding strength during the insulation process.

Raivolt is pleased to report that these recommendations led to a successful resolution and improved process reliability.

Ensuring Reliability: Standard Tests for Electrical Motor Insulation

To guarantee the safety and performance of electric motors, insulation systems must undergo rigorous standardized testing. These tests evaluate resistance to temperature, humidity, electrical stress, and aging—all critical factors that determine long-term reliability.

Key International Standards

• IEC 60085: Classification of insulation materials by thermal class (A, B, F, H, etc.)
• IEC 60216: Determination of thermal endurance through accelerated testing
• IEC 60034-18: Evaluation of insulation systems in rotating electrical machines
• ASTM D149: Dielectric breakdown voltage and dielectric strength of solid insulation
• ASTM D2240: Hardness testing of elastomeric materials
• ASTM D412: Tensile properties of thermoplastic elastomers

Essential Insulation Tests

Insulation Resistance Test – Measuring leakage current between windings and ground

Hipot (High Potential) Test – Verifying resistance against electrical discharge under high voltage

Thermal Endurance Test – Assessing insulation behavior under high temperature for lifetime prediction

Adhesion & Flexibility Test – Evaluating mechanical performance under bending and vibration
