When 7-year-old Tyrel Wolfe from Idaho packed a Christmas shoebox through Samaritan's Purse's "Operation Christmas Child" program, he included a photo of himself in a cowboy outfit and sent the box to children in the Philippines. Years later, a young woman named Joana Marchan sent him a friend request on Facebook-and eventually revealed that his shoebox had been the one she received. At first Tyrel didn't remember the gift, but after his mother jogged his memory he realized the connection.
Over time Tyrel and Joana began corresponding online, discovering shared interests and similar values. After meeting in person in the Philippines in 2013 and gaining approval from Joana's family, they married, first in a U.S. ceremony in October and later in the Philippines so her family could attend. The couple now contributes to the shoebox program annually, including notes that tell their story and reflect the love and connection it sparked.
