As there was an increasing demand for young, talented Indians in the emerging technologies of recent times, the new government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which took over in 2014, would focus more on skilling and job creation, G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said. Addressing the IGIC event here in Bengaluru, Kant said that it has become imperative to skill and retune the curriculum of engineering colleges and IITs according to the present needs of the industry, particularly in high demand areas like artificial intelligence ๐Ÿค–, machine learning ๐Ÿ“Š, data science ๐Ÿ“ˆ, and cybersecurity ๐Ÿ”’. The government says it aspires that through focused skilling and apprenticeship vast numbers of new jobs will be created to fill up the talent gap over the next five years.

India is fortunate to be at the right moment. This is a sort of culmination of several years of right economic policies. There is a newfound optimism about technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship among students and youngsters in India ๐Ÿš€. Indeed, there has been a sea change about the image of India. India is known now in the world for its software programmers and talented workforce ๐Ÿ’ป. Thus, Soumitra Dutta is the dean of Oxford University's Said Business School.

According to Claude Smadja, Chairman, Smadja & Smadja Strategic Advisory, experts from across the globe have been sharing ideas and expertise, from technology trends, biotech ๐Ÿงฌ, deep tech, innovation, start-up ecosystem ๐ŸŒฑ, to AI. This interaction only grows conviction that the entire world is recognizing the immense potential of India and at the same time, how 'skilling' for the future will have to be a work in progress without further ado.

๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ“‰ Global markets took a hit on Monday following the release of the US jobs report, which exceeded recovery estimates but also indicated rising unemployment for the second consecutive month. Most markets, including those in Europe and Asia, posted losses.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ’ถ The euro fell to its weakest level against the dollar in nearly a month, trading at $1.0766, after French President Emmanuel Macron disbanded the National Assembly following parliamentary elections where far-right parties made significant gains. This political shock led to declines in major European indices: the CAC 40 in Paris was down 1.7%, Germany's DAX retreated 0.7%, and Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.4%.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ“‰ US futures also saw declines, with S&P 500 futures shedding 0.1% and Dow Jones Industrial Average futures retreating 0.2%.

๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ“Š In Asia, markets were mixed. Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.9% despite the country's annualized 1.8% economic contraction in the January-March period. South Korea's Kospi lost 0.8%. Markets in China, Hong Kong, Australia, and Taiwan were closed for holidays.

๐Ÿ“ˆ๐Ÿ“ The US jobs report showed a larger-than-expected increase of 272,000 jobs in May, but the rising unemployment rate suggests some weakening in the job market. This presents a challenge for the Federal Reserve, as inflation remains high and consumer spending is being squeezed, particularly for lower-income individuals. Last week's data indicated economic moderation, with contracting manufacturing and falling worker productivity. Retailers have reported reduced spending on non-essential items.

๐Ÿ“ˆ๐Ÿ’ต Both the 10-year Treasury and two-year yield rose following the jobs report. Fed officials are expected to hold rates steady at the upcoming meeting, with investors pricing in potential rate cuts in July.

The crisis order of the jobs of India has remained a constant concern for over 15 years now. The critical issues that come within the vortex of the crisis of jobs involve low workforce participatory rates ๐Ÿ“‰ along with high unemployment of youth, women, and graduates ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŽ“. As experts ponder over the recent general election ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ, it has been accurate that economic distress and lack of jobs are the primary cause of concern in young India ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ, where employment opportunities were factored considerably in comparison to other socio-political issues.

An intransigent reason for the jobs problem is the elitism of our economic thinking ๐Ÿ’ญ. But the case of chess democratisation โ™Ÿ๏ธ has a lesson to teach. This game, seen as an elite pastime, has been made available to all, with results that are there for all to see, in terms of international success ๐Ÿ†. That inclusiveness can be extended to our economic policies for creating good jobs and to get more people participating in the workforce ๐Ÿ’ผ.

In economic policy, innovative, inclusive, and democratizing opportunities in all sectors are a strategic route to valuably and effectively address the jobs crisis facing India ๐Ÿ“Š. There's quite a bit to learn from chess on strategically addressing unemployment and the empowerment of the young, women, and graduate populations in gainful and self-sustaining employment.

Unemployment has been a major challenge for India. The growth-based employment strategy hasnโ€™t worked. In 2019, Ekatm Prabodh Mandal proposed a new model: employment-led growth rooted in Bharatiya ethos. Their report, โ€œSampoorn Rojgar-The Priority Goal & Actions,โ€ emphasizes at least one employed member per family.

Sustainable Employment Ideas ๐ŸŒฑ
Western job creation models, relying on consumer demand, have failed. Instead, Ekatm Prabodh Mandal suggests diverting purchasing power to lower economic strata and focusing on areas like backward regions and cattle rearing. This creates jobs and reduces dependency on government aid.

Decentralization & Local Activities ๐ŸŒพ
The think tank advocates for localized projects over foreign-funded large projects to benefit local communities. Their blueprint includes principles like people-centered development, dignity of labor, and appropriate technology.

Human-Centric Models ๐Ÿ‘ฅ
Dr. Bajrang Lal Gupt's "Sumangalam" promotes a system where producers and consumers have direct relationships, maximizing output and worker satisfaction. This shift requires enabling private sector and self-employment opportunities locally.

In the year 2023, it was hard for technologists all over the world ๐ŸŒ with great numbers of employees being laid off ๐Ÿ˜”. Only Infosys had to let go of 24,182 people ๐Ÿšช, while Wipro saw 21,875 people being handed the pink slip ๐Ÿ“‰. One97 Communications, the parent company of Paytm, is going through major restructuring to reduce its workforce expenses. ๐Ÿ“‰ It plans to cut 15โ€“20% of its workforce, translating into about 5,000-6,300 employees losing their jobs as part of a plan aimed at saving โ‚น400-500 crore. ๐Ÿ’ฐ For FY23, One97 Communications had an average of 32,798 employees on payroll with 29,503 on active duty. ๐Ÿ“Š However, the company is facing some financial pressures despite the fact that Y-O-Y total employee cost was up by 34% to โ‚น3,124 crore. ๐Ÿ“ˆ December saw more than a thousand workers laid off already by the company. This is one of many steps that have been taken towards making Paytmโ€™s operations leaner and less expensive. ๐Ÿฆ Paytm reported a net loss of โ‚น550 crore in the January-March quarter compared to โ‚น168 crore in the previous year. ๐Ÿ“‰ Revenue from operations also dropped by 3% YoY to โ‚น2,267 crore due to restrictions imposed on Paytm Payments Bank by RBI. ๐Ÿšซ Nevertheless, in spite of these setbacks, Vijay Shekhar Sharma โ€“ CEO and Founder โ€“ remains upbeat and said it was important for them to go over this experience so they can prepare better for future vulnerabilities and be completely aligned with all rules guiding them accordingly. ๐Ÿš€

Since 2022, more than 130 Indian start-ups have laid off over 37260 employees. This has been worsened by the ongoing funding winter with the edtech sector being the most heavily hit.

๐Ÿ“š Edtech Under Pressure
Overwhelmed by the need to lay off a shocking number of 14816 employees are all seven edtech unicorns. The struggles of this industry show that in general, Indian startups face difficult challenges in terms of raising funds and staying in business.

๐Ÿ“Š Recent Layoff Highlights
Way Cool Foods: Restructuring exercise; reduced workforce by 70 people. Log9 Materials: Laid off 115 contractual workers. Wint Wealth: Cut down staff levels by a fifth. Bliss club: announced redundancy for 21 persons, which is approximately an eighth of its workforce. Licious: About 80 people were dismissed during restructure process.

โš–๏ธ Struggle of the Startup Ecosystem
The burst bubble in 2021 led to severe fund shortage where only $10bn was raised by Indian start-ups last year. In order to extend runways and cut costs, investors are now pushing startups for layoffs across different areas.

๐Ÿšจ Ongoing Challenges
Within six businesses this year alone layoffs have affected over seven fifty-five members. These job cuts resulting from factors such as restructuring, cost reduction measures and the adoption of AI driven automation have affected employees at all levels and departmental functions.

Silent layoffs can take many forms, such as not renewing contracts, reducing working hours, offering early retirement, or leaving open positions vacant. According to the Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES), top IT companies have laid off over two thousand to three thousand professionals in 2024 alone. ๐Ÿ”„

This trend is part of a global pattern, with companies like Apple, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft announcing job cuts over the last 12-18 months. Companies have also increased working hours for remaining employees to boost profit margins at their expense. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’ป

According to a PwC report, the number of Indian employees who will change jobs in 2024 is expected to be about 42%, ๐Ÿ“ˆ which is much higher than the global average of just over a quarter. ๐ŸŒ The reason for such an increase can be attributed largely to the quest for better remuneration ๐Ÿ’ฐ and promotions. Specifically, millennials want better salaries and chances for growth in their careers as evidenced by statistics indicating that up to 74% identify this criterion. ๐Ÿ“Š

The rising importance of upskilling due to uncertainty in jobs is evident from this survey. Over half of employees polled believe that their job skills will undergo significant changes during the next five years as the work environment continues changing. ๐Ÿ”„ As a result, many are moving towards other opportunities that not only offer competitive pay but also job satisfaction ๐Ÿ˜Š and prospects for advancement. ๐Ÿ“ˆ

It is important, however, to note that AI has both brought good tidings and some challenges as well among Indian employees. Nevertheless, there are workers in India; about one out of five (21%) fear that it will automate their roles ๐Ÿค– while over half (51%) feel AI will enhance their performance in the workplace. ๐Ÿš€ This index demonstrates a complex relationship between India and global averages with regard to tech development.

Similarly, Indian businesspersons acknowledge the need for reshaping their workforce to be ready for tomorrowโ€™s triumphs. As noted by Kartik Rishi, Partner at PwC India, career choices have become far more dependent on upskilling today. ๐ŸŽ“

A study by Natixis SA, one of the largest banking institutions in France, found that India needs to create at least 115 million jobs by 2030 to keep its economy growing and support a fast growing population. Trinh Nguyen, a senior economist at the bank, said that India has targeted an annual increase of about 12.4 million jobs over previous years. However, India urgently requires over 16.5 million new positions annually according to the report.

๐Ÿ“ˆNevertheless, Indian youth unemployment is relatively high despite being one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia with only about 58 percent of them are engaged actively in labour market activities compared to other countries participating from the region as noted earlier by Trinh Nguyen.

๐ŸŒAccording to their findings, manufacturing should leverage formal sector employment involving policies linked to demographic and geopolitical opportunities in order for it not only Indiaโ€™s but also regions development prospects could be achieved through job creation efforts.
