Cell Phone Jammers: New Technologies Preventing Cell Phones Use While Driving

The U.S. Department of Transportation is looking at new technologies to prevent drivers from using their cell phones while driving, a trend that has grown and resulted in an alarming number of fatalities and injuries. Last year, texting or talking on the phone claimed nearly 5,500 lives and an additional 500,000 people were injured.

Ray Lahood, Transportation Secretary, has confirmed several studies of various technologies are under way that will help prevent these kinds of accidents, including devices that are able to disable cell phones. This kind of technology is being further examined in an effort to eliminate the use of cell phones while people are driving. While discussing the issue with MSNBC, Lahood stated that “There’s a lot of technology out there now that can disable phones and we’re looking at that. That’s one way. But you have to have good laws, you have to have good enforcement, and you have to have people take personal responsibility. That’s the bottom line.”

Cell phone jammers would render all cell phones useless. Not only would the driver’s cell phone be unusable but any of the vehicles’ other occupants cell phones would be as well. There are obvious glitches in this strategy but the Department of Transportation is already looking into software solutions that will be able to detect when a cell phone is being used while driving.

Since this restricting technology is not mandated by the Government, it will most likely be left up to the individuals who want to have the technology for their own benefit, or car companies can install such devices in their new models. Washington State currently has a law that makes talking on a cell phone without a hands free device and texting while driving a primary offense with a fine of $124.

Some skeptics believe that any added technology will not be enough to curb peoples’ impulse to talk or text while driving and that ultimately a change of attitude will be responsible for lowering the number of distracted driving accidents. Until these new technologies are available, if more people decide to do the right thing and exhibit safe driving behavior at all times, not only would there be less tragedies, but these restricting devices would be rendered unnecessary.

Oracle: We Will Continue Software Development For HP Itanium Servers

Oracle will continue developing the latest versions of its software for HP’s Itanium servers — including the next release of Oracle's flagship database — even as it appeals a judge's ruling in the long-running dispute.

"Oracle will continue building the latest versions of its database and other software covered by the judge's ruling to HP Itanium computers," the company said in a statement. "Oracle software on HP's Itanium computers will be released on approximately the same schedule as Oracle software on IBM's Power systems." That includes version 12c of the Oracle database, which is due out in early 2013.

Oracle said in March 2011 that it would no longer develop its software for Itanium, an Intel processor HP uses in some of its server lines. It argued that Itanium is nearing end of life — a fact Oracle said HP is trying to hide to preserve its Itanium-related business as long as possible.

HP filed a breach-of-contract suit arguing that Oracle had committed to continue supporting Itanium as part of a September 20, 2010, settlement of an earlier lawsuit related to Oracle's hiring of former Mark Hurd, former CEO, HP.

After 12 days of testimony in June, Judge James Kleinberg of the Superior Court of California, Santa Clara County, handed down a preliminary decision on August 1, agreeing with HP that Oracle must continue developing its software for HP's Itanium servers for as long as HP manufactures and sells them.

Last week Kleinberg handed down his final ruling in the case, reiterating his findings in the preliminary decision. Oracle has vowed to appeal the judge's decision.

HP did not immediately return a request for comment on the Oracle statement.

Greenest electronics? HP outranks Apple

Apple may have today's hottest-selling electronics, but computer maker Hewlett Packard outranks it along with Dell and Nokia in a scorecard of 15 companies for reducing its carbon footprint and making greener (though eventually fewer) products, the environmental group Greenpeace announced Wednesday.

In its 17th Guide to Greener Electronics, the group said HP rose three spots from last year by reducing the carbon emissions from its manufacturing as well as its supply chain and for advocating legislation to fight climate change. In August, HP, the world's largest seller of desktop and laptop computers, said it would stop selling tablets and smartphones and might exit its PC operations.

"After many of the world's leading electronics companies rose to the challenge of phasing out the worst hazardous substances, we are now challenging them to improve their sourcing of minerals and better managing the energy use throughout the supply chain", said Greenpeace International campaigner Tom Dowdall in announcing the results.

How did others fare?

Dell moved up from 10th position to second this year, having made ambitious plans to reduce its carbon emissions 40% by 2020.
Nokia, after three years at the top of the annual scorecard, slipped to third place, mainly because of weaker performance in energy use.
Apple moved up five places to score fourth best overall, doing well on green products and relatively well on sustainable operations poorly on energy.

Blackberry manufacturer Research in Motion, ranked for the first time this year, comes in last. Greenpeace says it scores well for its sustainable paper policy but needs to improve reporting and disclosure of its environmental performance.

The Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics also ranks Philips, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Lenovo, Panasonic, Sony, Acer, Sharp, LG Electronics and Toshiba.

Dell offers dedicated servers to build private clouds
Cloud Dedicated program moves workloads off premises to data center where Dell will deliver IaaS offerings through private cloud...

Dell on Thursday said it will offer dedicated servers in its data centers and off-premises application and storage services for companies looking to establish private clouds.

Dell's Cloud Dedicated program intends to reduce the stress of companies hosting servers locally by moving workloads off premises to Dell's data centers. Dell will deliver IaaS (infrastructure-as-a-service) offerings through the private cloud, which could reduce the costs involved in deploying servers and managing services locally.

The program helps companies move applications into the cloud, and the service levels can meet security and compliance requirements, Dell said. The service bundles storage and networking, and can handle large or small workloads. A number of managed service options are offered with the program.

Dell, which also sells servers to companies, has been expanding its cloud services offerings by opening data centers to host public, private, and hybrid clouds. The company last year said it would spend $1 billion over three years to expand its cloud, services, and data storage offerings, with part of the investment going toward opening data centers. Starting last year, the company has opened data centers in the U.S., Europe, and Asia-Pacific.

Gartner earlier this month said spending for worldwide IT outsourcing services would reach $251.7 billion this year, with cloud computing services being the fastest growing segment. Gartner said spending on cloud services in 2012 is expected to total $5 billion, growing by grow 48.7 percent compared to 2011.

Dell has also acquired many companies over the last few years to expand cloud services. One of Dell's earliest acquisitions was Boomi, which simplifies deployment and management of cloud-based applications alongside existing on-premises applications, and the company in 2011 acquired SecureWorks, which now is central to security services provided in the cloud. Dell is also trying to piece together its cloud strategy through recent acquisitions, such as virtual desktop company Wyse Technology, cloud-based data backup and recovery services AppAssure and security company SonicWall, which were all acquired this year. Dell in July also said it would acquire Quest Software for $2.4 billion.

Outside of the new private cloud offering, Dell in the coming weeks will make pre-configured public and hybrid cloud bundles available for online order. The pre-configured services are available depending on storage or workload capabilities, and users will also be able to pay an hourly rate for less predictable or workloads based on cyclical trends where cloud requirements could shoot up at any given time.

The company is also expanding the availability of the Dell Cloud with VMware vCloud Datacenter Services to U.K., France, Ireland, and Mexico. The cloud offering is currently available in U.S. and Canada.

Dell competes with companies such as Amazon, IBM, and Hewlett-Packard, which is now expanding its cloud services offerings through the HP Cloud website.
