Introduction of Li-Fi Technology

In simple terms, Li-Fi can be thought of as a light-based Wi-Fi. That is, it uses light instead of radio waves to transmit information. And instead of Wi-Fi modems, Li-Fi would use transceiver-fitted LED lamps that can light a room as well as transmit and receive information. Since simple light bulbs are used, there can technically be any number of access points.

This technology uses a part of the electromagnetic spectrum that is still not greatly utilized- The Visible Spectrum. Light is in fact very much part of our lives for millions and millions of years and does not have any major ill effect. Moreover there is 10,000 times more space available in this spectrum and just counting on the bulbs in use, it also multiplies to 10,000 times more availability as an infrastructure, globally.

It is possible to encode data in the light by varying the rate at which the LEDs flicker on and off to give different strings of 1s and 0s. The LED intensity is modulated so rapidly that human eyes cannot notice, so the output appears constant.

More sophisticated techniques could dramatically increase VLC data rates. Teams at the University of Oxford and the University of Edinburgh are focusing on parallel data transmission using arrays of LEDs, where each LED transmits a different data stream. Other groups are using mixtures of red, green and blue LEDs to alter the light's frequency, with each frequency encoding a different data channel.

Li-Fi, as it has been dubbed, has already achieved blisteringly high speeds in the lab. Researchers at the Heinrich Hertz Institute in Berlin, Germany, have reached data rates of over 500 megabytes per second using a standard white-light LED. Haas has set up a spin-off firm to sell a consumer VLC transmitter that is due for launch next year. It is capable of transmitting data at 100 MB/s - faster than most UK broadband connections.

How Li-Fi Works?

Li-Fi is typically implemented using white LED light bulbs at the downlink transmitter. These devices are normally used for illumination only by applying a constant current. However, by fast and subtle variations of the current, the optical output can be made to vary at extremely high speeds. This very property of optical current is used in Li-Fi setup. The operational procedure is very simple-, if the LED is on, you transmit a digital 1, if it’s off you transmit a 0. The LEDs can be switched on and off very quickly, which gives nice opportunities for transmitting data. Hence all that is required is some LEDs and a controller that code data into those LEDs. All one has to do is to vary the rate at which the LED’s flicker depending upon the data we want to encode. Further enhancements can be made in this method, like using an array of LEDs for parallel data transmission, or using mixtures of red, green and blue LEDs to alter the light’s frequency with each frequency encoding a different data channel. Such advancements promise a theoretical speed of 10 Gbps – meaning one can download a full high-definition film in just 30 seconds.

Testing eCall systems: how to benefit from synergies with existing GSM test platforms

The automotive eCall (emergency call) system is an emergency cellular communication service that will become mandatory in vehicles introduced in Europe after 2014.

In the event of an emergency or accident, the eCall e112 flag system will provide the ability to call the local emergency services via a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) using any available cellular network. While eCall will not prevent accidents, it will speed the arrival of emergency assistance.

A key requirement is that data and voice calls must use the same voice channel because SMS and GPRS do not provide the necessary service priority or availability. Routing data over the voice connection will enable eCall to use the e112 routing protocol standards deployed in the existing cellular network.

Carbon nanotube-based gas sensors created at TUM offer a unique combination of characteristics that can't be matched by any of the alternative technologies. They rapidly detect and continuously respond to extremely small changes in the concentrations of gases including ammonia, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxide. They operate at room temperature and consume very little power. Furthermore, as the TUM researchers report in their latest papers, such devices can be fabricated on flexible backing materials through large-area, low-cost processes.

Thus it becomes realistic to envision plastic food wrap that incorporates flexible, disposable gas sensors, providing a more meaningful indicator of food freshness than the sell-by date. Measuring carbon dioxide, for example, can help predict the shelf life of meat. "Smart packaging" -- assuming consumers find it acceptable and the devices' non-toxic nature can be demonstrated -- could enhance food safety and might also vastly reduce the amount of food that is wasted. Used in a different setting, the same sort of gas sensor could make it less expensive and more practical to monitor indoor air quality in real time.

Japan robot can pick strawberry fields forever for farmer

A robot that picks ripe strawberries as the farmer sleeps was unveiled in Japan on Wednesday, with its developer saying it could cut workloads by two-thirds.

The device, which can gather a piece of fruit every eight seconds, uses three cameras to determine which strawberries are ready to pick before darting out an arm and snipping them into its basket.

The two-metre (6ft 6ins) robot moves on rails between rows of strawberries, which are usually grown in elevated planters in greenhouses in Japan.

It "calculates the degree of ripeness from the colour of the strawberry, which it observes with two digital cameras", said Mitsutaka Kurita, an official of Shibuya Seiki which developed the machine.

"It also uses the images from the two cameras to calculate the distance from the target, then approaches the strawberry it is aiming at," he said.

A third camera then takes a detailed picture of the fruit, which it uses for the final calculation before moving in for the snip.

Strawberry farming is highly labour-intensive, requiring 70 times the input that growing rice requires and twice that of tomatoes and cucumbers, said a statement from co-developer the National Agriculture and Food Research Organisation.

"This robot would harvest two-thirds of strawberries during the night when growers are sleeping," Kurita said.

"The farmer can then pick the rest of the strawberries that the robot couldn't get at," he said.

The robot will be on sale early next year for about five million yen ($50,000).

Strawberries are available all year round in Japan, where they usually cost at least 500 yen for a small punnet.

China’s Leading Search Engine Is Playing Catch-Up in Mobile

Baidu claims 82 percent of China’s Web-page searches, but the company is struggling to hang on to mobile users. Although Baidu Chief Financial Officer Jennifer Li puts the company’s share of mobile search at “well above” 50 percent, its total search share has fallen in the past year, IResearch data show. As Baidu’s share drops, rivals such as messaging powerhouse Tencent (700:HK) and software maker Qihoo 360 Technology (QIHU) see opportunities to gain ground in mobile by luring users with games and other apps.

Baidu is fighting back with a spate of acquisitions. In May it spent $370 million to buy PPS TV, a peer-to-peer streaming video network. Baidu spokesman Kaiser Kuo says PPS, combined with Baidu’s homegrown video site, IQiyi, will make it No. 1 in China for mobile video viewing. To compete with Alibaba and Tencent for app revenue, Baidu in July paid $1.85 billion for 91 Wireless, a mobile-app store. On Aug. 23, Baidu announced a $160 million deal for group-buying site Nuomi.com. The company says it’s teaming with smaller businesses to develop and host mobile shopping apps, taking a cut of app-generated sales.

These moves add up to an expensive bet on mobile. The 91 Wireless deal was the priciest in China’s Web history and valued the company at 16.7 times 12-month sales. Nuomi was valued at 12.7 times sales. To put that in perspective, Amazon.com (AMZN) is valued at only two times its sales. Baidu also has sold $2.5 billion in bonds since November.

Intel Finds Its Digital Heartbeat in a Teeny-Tiny Chip

In 1965, Intel’s (INTC) co-founder Gordon Moore authored a paper that attempted to clue people in to a coming era of technological wonder. Cheap transistors, he wrote, would eventually lead to things like personal computers. A cartoon included in the paper showed the machines being sold in department stores alongside “notions” and cosmetics. What’s more, people could expect to see “a proliferation of electronics” that would likely include clever wearable devices like smart wristwatches.

The paper (PDF) reads as so prescient that you come away feeling like Moore must have had a crystal ball at his disposal. And yet, if he did, he didn’t share it with other executives at Intel. Here we are in 2013, and Intel has only just come out with a product capable of fulfilling Moore’s vision. It’s called Quark, and Intel unveiled it at the company’s flagship customer conference on Tuesday in San Francisco.

Compared with Intel’s chips that go into servers, PCs, and even smartphones, Quark is a pipsqueak. It’s about one-fifth the size of Intel’s smallest chips and consumes about one-tenth as much power. Intel bills Quark as the type of chip that could make its way into those watches championed decades ago by Moore and eventually into even smaller things like body sensors.

Intel is late to the game—and how—with this type of technology. Dozens of companies make so-called microcontrollers and embedded processors that go into things that need a bit of computing oomph, ranging from something like a Fitbit step tracker to a dishwasher. These smart devices have come to be sold under the Internet of Things banner and are expected to get smarter and do more over time.

Executives from Intel have spent years talking up the company’s plans to be the “digital heartbeat” behind all manner of products. The marketing team liked to champion the idea of Intel Everywhere rather than the old Intel Inside that accompanied the PC revolution. Truth be told, though, Intel did not really have a product to sell alongside the marketing shtick.

Historically, Intel has been able to sell its chips for tens, hundreds, and even thousands of dollars each, producing just about the highest profits in the industry. But microcontrollers and the like sell for dollars and pennies each, which explains some of Intel’s reluctance to charge into the market. Intel’s large, complex, and hot chip designs have also been ill-suited for running inside tiny devices.

With Quark, Intel will go up against companies such as Renesas Electronics (RNECY) and Freescale Semiconductor (FSL). It plans to show off products based on the chip next year, which should make Moore smile.

Back in February, Archos announced three new Platinum tablets that appeared to offer top-shelf specs for wallet-friendly price tags.
