Multimeter with their functions, types, and applications

Multimeters are widely used in measurement technology. The multimeter can measure various electrical quantities like resistance, AC and DC voltage, current, capacitance, etc. at one go. Voltmeter, ammeter, and millimeter are combined in a multimeter, which is also called VOM (Volt-Ohm Millimeter). Multimeters may also have different capabilities, for example, diode testing, coherence testing, transistor testing, TTL logic testing, and repetition testing. This device plays an important role in finding the problems present in the circuit so that those problems can be easily rectified.

It is a handheld device with positive and negative indicator needles on a numerical LCD digital display. Multimeters can be used to test batteries, household wiring, electric motors, and power supplies.

The essential parts of a multimeter mainly consist of a display, power source, probe and control.

Different Types of Ohmmeters along with Their Working and Applications

There are different types of ohmmeters with different levels. Like micro, mega, and milli ohmmeter, etc. Low resistance is measured by a micro-ohmmeter and high resistance by a mega-ohmmeter. Using an ohmmeter is easy and convenient, but the result obtained is less accurate.

The instrument which is used to measure the electrical resistance of a circuit and the resistance of the components of an electric circuit is called an ohmmeter. An ohmmeter can also be used to find the value of an unknown resistor. Resistance is measured in ohms.

Types of Ohmmeters

The following are the three main types of ohmmeters.

Series Ohmmeter.
Shunt Ohmmeter.
Multi-Range Ohmmeter.

Other Types of Ohmmeters

The Following are other types of Ohmmeters.

Micro Ohmmeter.
Milli Ohmmeter.
Mega ohmmeter (Megger).
Digital Ohmmeter.

Applications of Ohmmeters

An ohmmeter can be used to ensure the continuity of the circuit which means that if there is enough current through the circuit or there is a very large flow of current then the circuit will fall apart.

They are widely used in electronic laboratories in engineering to test electronic components.

These are used for debugging small ICs such as PCBs and other stuff that needs to be executed in sensitive equipment.

Different Types of Ammeters

An instrument used to measure direct (DC) or alternating (AC) electric current is called an ammeter. Current is the flow of electrons whose SI unit is ampere. Therefore, the instrument with which the flow of current in an ampere is measured is called the ampere meter or ammeter.

For an ideal ammeter, the internal resistance of the ammeter should be zero but in practice, the ammeter has little internal resistance which is considered to be negligible. The measurement value of the ammeter depends on the value of the resistance.

Ammeter Shunt
Effect of temperature in ammeter

Types of Ammeter

The classification of an ammeter depends on its design and the type of current flowing through the ammeter.

Permanent moving coil ammeter.
Moving iron ammeter.
Electro-dynamometer ammeter.
Rectifier type ammeter.
DC Ammeter.
AC Ammeter.

Different Types of DC Voltmeters:
The DC voltmeter measures the DC voltage by moving the pointer against a fully calibrated scale. The calibrated scale is obtained by a PMMC meter.
The voltage to be measured is passed through the attenuator and then through the DC gain amplifier.
When DC voltage is measured with a DC voltmeter it is fed into the attenuator and then the output from the attenuator is passed through DC coupled amplifiers.

Types of DC Voltmeters
There are two types of DC Voltmeter.

Direct Coupled Cascade Amplifier DC voltmeter.
Chopper Type DC Voltmeter.

The performance characteristics of the measuring instrument are classified as static and dynamic characteristics. Error is one of the stable characteristics. The difference between the true value and the measured value does not change over time. The true value is the average of an infinite number of measurements, and the measured value is the exact value.

The errors that arise during any measurement are called measurement errors. The error can arise due to many reasons.

Types of Measurement Errors
Measurement errors can be classified into the following five types.

Constant Errors
Systematic Errors
Random Errors
Absolute Errors
Relative Errors

A voltmeter is an electrical component (voltage) measuring instrument that measures the amount of voltage at any two points in an electrical circuit. The units of voltage are volts and the measuring device is a meter that measures voltage by calibrating it to volts, millivolts (0.001 volts), or kilovolts (1,000 volts).

A voltmeter has a high internal resistance which is used in measuring the potential difference between two points of a circuit. In this way, the flow of current is controlled by the measuring instrument. This allows the device to take accurate readings of the voltage.

On the basis of the type of voltage voltmeter can be classified into the following two types:

DC Voltmeter.
AC Voltmeter.

Measuring instruments are devices that represent the measured quantity in the form of the widely displayed information. The characteristics of measuring instruments help to know the performance of an instrument and measure any quantity or parameter.
A measuring instrument may show the measured value directly or it may show a value equal to the known measurement value of the same quantity. In order to perform correctly, an instrument has to have some quality such as a non-existent error in the instrument, accurate measurement of the quantity or parameter measured, no lag, etc.

Types of performance characteristics
The performance characteristics of measuring instruments can be classified into two types.

Static Characteristics
Dynamic Characteristics

The instruments which are used to measure the power factors in any quantity are known as measuring instruments. Which are useful for measuring electrical quantities or parameters. The electric current cannot be detected by the eye. Electronic measuring instruments are used to measure the flow of electricity. These tools are important for understanding the nature and voltage of electric charges flowing in any electronic device.

Electronic measuring instruments are widely used to measure the amount of electric charge and the amount of electricity flowing through various electronic devices. Because different instruments involve different types of electric current and to measure current, voltage, and resistance, different types of electronic measuring instruments are designed and calibrated for different electronic devices.

Some disadvantages of field effect transistors are high drain resistance, moderate input impedance, and slow operation. To overcome these shortcomings, the MOSFET was invented, which is an advanced FET.

Metal Oxide Silicon Field Effect Transistor or Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor, abbreviated as MOSFET. It is also called IGFET Insulated Gate Field Effect Transistor. The FET is operated in both depletion and enhancement mode.

MOSFET has three terminals source, drain, and gate. The flow of current from the source to the drain is controlled by the voltage applied at the gate terminal. The presence of an insulating layer of metal oxide results in high input impedance to the device.

A junction field effect transistor is a type of FET used as a switch that can be controlled electrically. The junction field effect transistor is opposite the bipolar junction transistor. JFETs are voltage-controlled devices. In JFET, the current flow is mostly due to charge carriers. Whereas, in BJT, the current flow is due to both minority and majority charge carriers. Only most of the charge carriers are responsible for the current flow. JFETs are unidirectional. The first working model of the junction field-effect transistor was made in 1953.

Operation of Junction Field Effect Transistor

The working of a JFET can be compared to a garden hose pipe. If there is no blockage then water flows easily through the garden hose pipeline, but if we bend the pipe a bit, the water flow slows down. This is how JFET works. Here the hose is in line with the JFET, and the water flow is equal to a current. We control the current flow by constructing the current carrying channel as per our requirement.

Junction field effect transistors are generally classified into two types based on the source of current flow and they are:

N-channel Junction Field Effect Transistor.
P-channel Junction Field Effect Transistor.
