From being diagnosed with depression and ADHD as an adolescent, to finding her place among one of the "richest self-made women in the world", it has been an inspiring journey.
Where did it all begin?
Nasty Gal's first workstation was Sophia's bedroom. At the age of 22, she opened an online ebay store named 'Nasty Gal Vintage'. Photography, styling, and shipping was all done by Amoruso herself. The first ever sale she made on Nasty Gal was a book she stole as a teenager!! Yes, as a young adult, Sophia had adopted a nomadic lifestyle, where she engaged in hitchhiking, dumpster diving and even stealing. Sophia had dropped out of school as an adolescent and continued with homeschooling because of depression. Her first job as a teenager was at the Subway, proceeding with other jobs including at a bookstore and record shop, but the lady always had the spirit of a queen!
Nasty Gal developed and grew as its own retail website with revenues reaching almost $23 million in 2011.
What started with a single employee, who was Sophia herself, now had over 200 employees. She also made it to the list of richest Self-Made Women List With $280 Million Fortune.
Her 2014 autobiography, was adapted by Netflix for a series with the same name.
In 2015, Sophia stepped down from her role as the CEO of Nasty Gal and in 2017 Boohoo Group purchased the company. Amoruso then founded Girlboss media which continues to inspire females all around the world!
