While the 2026 brought conversations around technology and innovation to Mumbai, was in Pune exploring how technology can strengthen governance on the ground.

#๐—ก๐—œ๐—ง๐—œ ๐—ง๐—”๐—ฅ๐—” is a portable, internet-enabled governance device that brings data, planning tools and collaborative review capabilities directly to districts and blocks.
And with the #๐—ฆ๐— ๐—ฅ๐—œ๐—ง๐—œ ๐—ง๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—น, conversations can go even further.

๐—ฃ๐—ผ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฏ๐˜† ๐—•๐—›๐—”๐—ฆ๐—›๐—œ๐—ก๐—œ, SMRITI helps generate ๐—”๐—œ-๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฑ, ๐—บ๐˜‚๐—น๐˜๐—ถ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜‚๐˜๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ๐˜€, helping ensure that important discussions are captured and translated into clear next steps.

India's language diversity has always been its strength, now it has the infrastructure to match.

The National Hub for Language Technology (NHLT), built by the BHASHINI is designed from the ground up to make language technology open, accessible, and scalable for every innovator, startup, and citizen across the country. It isn't just an idea; it's live infrastructure already operating at national scale, handling 22 million inferences daily and over 9 billion inferences till date, powering millions of real-world use cases across Indian languages. And it does this efficiently, delivering sub-200ms response times using fewer than 200 GPUs, proving that production-grade, sovereign AI doesn't have to come at the cost of speed or optimisation.

What makes NHLT different is the philosophy behind it. It stands on four pillars: a unified platform that brings all of India's language AI into one ecosystem; being open and interoperable, so the models and APIs are accessible to researchers, startups, and citizens alike rather than locked away; a scalable ecosystem that takes technology from research labs to real-world impact; and a commitment to serving every Indian, enabling linguistic diversity and inclusion instead of flattening it. Sovereign, open, inclusive, scalable.

This month, that ecosystem grows stronger with the addition of SraVaani, a multilingual Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) model developed by ARTPARK (AI & Robotics Technology Park, I-Hub at IISc) in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science. SraVaani is trained across 65 Indian languages and dialects, built on the Vaani dataset, one of the largest speech corpora ever assembled for Indian languages, and uses innovative multimodal learning techniques to achieve higher recognition accuracy, including better performance even without additional transcriptions. Hosting SraVaani on NHLT means India's research institutions and its national language infrastructure are now working in lockstep, turning cutting-edge academic research into a tool that's immediately usable at population scale.

NHLT and SraVaani together are building the foundation for an AI future where no Indian language is left behind.

BHASHINI is India's sovereign language AI platform designed to make language technology open, accessible, and scalable for every Indian. At its core sits NHLT (National Hub for Language Technology), a unified, open & interoperable, and scalable ecosystem connecting people, technology, and opportunity for every Indian, backed by open-source models and APIs, production-grade infrastructure, and a mission to serve India's full linguistic diversity.

The platform is already operating at national scale: 22M inferences daily and 9B inferences till date, with response times under 200ms, all optimised to run on fewer than 200 GPUs, a sovereign system built for efficiency as much as scale.

BHASHINI now hosts world-class Indic AI models from Bodhan AI and AI4Bharat, spanning four core capabilities:

Indic-Transcribe โ€” an open 1.2B-parameter ASR model delivering accurate speech recognition across all 22 constitutional Indian languages, two Hindi dialects, and Bhili and Bhojpuri, handling code-mixed speech with native, romanized, or mixed-script output.

Indic-Translate โ€” a 4B-parameter document-level translation model covering English and all 22 Eighth Schedule languages bidirectionally, capable of translating whole documents in a single request, in native script, Roman script, or a mix of both.

Indic-Speak โ€” a text-to-speech engine with 45 voices across 22 Indian languages and 12 scripts, built to read native and Latin scripts together in one sentence, without language tags.

IndicOCR โ€” a two-stage document parser for English and 22 Indian languages, combining a 33M-parameter layout parser with a 0.8B block-level OCR model.

Together, these position BHASHINI as the connective infrastructure layer for India's language AI ecosystem, sovereign, open, and built to make sure every Indian language is understood natively. As the platform's own tagline puts it: "Transcending the Language Barrier."

Taking forward with BHASHINIโ€™s voice first multilingual technology.

BHASHINI, in collaboration with Sahitya Akademi, Maharashtra, brought together 150+ translators, academicians, researchers, students and language enthusiasts to explore how AI can strengthen Marathiโ€™s presence in the digital ecosystem.

Through demonstrations of , , , , and the Mobile App, participants explored new possibilities for translation, digitisation, preservation and access to content.

For BHASHINI, empowering Indian languages means ensuring that Marathi, and every language of India, can fully participate in the digital future.

The workshop came to an end.
But the questions, ideas and possibilities didnโ€™t.
What started as a conversation in Nepal became a reminder that the future of Language AI canโ€™t be built in isolation.

It has to be built together.
Across languages. Across communities. Across borders.

And for Bimla, thatโ€™s what made the Sangam more than just a workshop.
The workshop ended. The conversation continues.

The more they talked, the bigger the question became.

It wasnโ€™t just about students, websites or services anymore.

It was about everyday life.

And then, something even bigger:

โ€œBut what about our languages?โ€

For Bimla, this was the moment the conversation shifted from what Language AI can do today to who gets to shape what comes next.

And maybe thatโ€™s the real story.

Not just building AI for languages.

Building a future where languages are part of AI.

Bimlaโ€™s hackathon trail continuesโ€ฆ

Bimla is back to uncover another innovation story. This time, she calls Aaryan to share what she has discovered about the BHASHINI LEAP Hackathon and help him understand how language technology can transform policing.

โ€œAaryan, this one is different. Imagine multilingual AI helping police officers turn conversations into records, simplify documentation and make FIR filing smarter.โ€

As Bimla takes Aaryan through Problem Statement 2, they discover solutions built around multilingual and offline transcription, documentation, voice based FIR logging and smarter digital workflows.

And the innovators who stood out?

Winner: Team Multilipi, Mr. Dewang Bharadwaj
Runner Up: Team Soochna Sahayak, Mr. Agam Dayal

One more challenge explored. One more innovation uncovered.

Stay with Bimla and Aaryan as they discover the next problem statement.
