The Rhythm of Wi-Fi Network - Beacon Interval & Its Impact
Welcome back and I’m sure you are curious to know the answer of what keeps your device connected to Wi-Fi.
Remember our 'air freshener' spraying ‘scent’, or say our AP sending beacons? Do you think it's done just randomly? Well, absolutely not!
It has a defined rhythm, called the Beacon Interval which defines the intended frequency (typically every 102.4ms and it’s configurable) of sending beacons shouting “Hey! I’m here” and that keeps devices connected, synchronized and smart with power save information from beacon.
But why does this timing matter ❓ 🧠
🎯 Shorter Interval: Faster network discovery and roaming, but creates more network overhead (like spraying too often and choking the room with scent).
🎯 Longer Interval: Less overhead and longer sleep and battery save but slower for devices to find the network. Better for IoT devices operated by battery.
Question for you to ponder: Is the beacon always sent precisely at a configured interval? Put your thoughts in the comment box.
