Shutting down my business last year was an extremely difficult decision, and one of the hardest parts was having to cease supporting some of my long term clients. Having had a number of those clients reach out to me in recent months, I have made the decision to trial a return to self-employment as a freelance IT consultant. I am therefore happy to be able to return to offering support to homes and SMEs across the midlands, particularly in Tipperary, Offaly and East Galway.

Almost exactly nine years since I launched my business, I can now report that Daniel Flynn IT Services Limited has shut down.

I want to take the opportunity to thank everyone that has supported me over the past decade. Despite a mountain of research and business plans before I even began, I never could have appreciated just how difficult it is to run a small business single handedly. Marketing, record keeping, customer service, financials, social media, building relationships with clients and more... That's without even including the actual work that brings the income in. It has been an incredible learning experience, even if I will be glad to start a new adventure with a little more stability!

Most of my business over the past 9 years has come from supporting other small businesses. However in 2022, almost 80% of my income came from local businesses that were no longer in operation by the end of 2023. These knock on effects can be devastating to local communities, and it is never more important to appreciate what you have around you.

Our economy gets inflated each year by tax bills from massive multi-nationals and a small percentage of the population receiving huge incomes. For most communities around the country however, these outliers are an irrelevance that serve only to make our governments complacent. So please, don't make the same mistake that many of our politicians do. Value the businesses, services and employers around you. You never know what you have until it's gone.

Thank you again,

Daniel

After nine years in business, I am sorry to announce that Daniel Flynn IT Services Limited will be ceasing operations by the end of this year.

It has been a fantastic experience to build relationships and to help support businesses, individuals and families across the region over the past decade, and I am hugely appreciative for all the support I have received in turn.

If any small pieces of work are needed by my existing clients, please be sure to get in touch before November, and I will do all that I can to help before I shut up shop for the last time.

Thank you again,

Daniel

A very important warning about one of the most common online scams being used at the moment. After hacking a page that you are connected to, the criminals will use some pretext to ask for your phone number in a private message. They will then use this to initiate a "forgotten password" request on your account, and then attempt to manipulate you into sending them the link to reset your password. Once they have this, there is nothing to stop them taking full control of your account and locking you out for good.

Important notice - please do not respond to messages from Instagram accounts that look like this. Such accounts have been hacked by criminals. Once they have your phone number, they use it to initiate a "forgotten password" request and try to trick you into sending them the reset link. Once they have this link, they can take control of your own account and there will be absolutely nothing that you can do about it. Please help spread this important message.

Online fraud is becoming more and more sophisticated in its methods, so huge credit to my client Fogarty Plant Hire for foiling an attempt this morning. After receiving a perfectly formatted invoice from a regular supplier with a request to send to a new bank account, FPH staff contacted their supplier directly by telephone to query this. The supplier was able to confirm that their bank details had not changed, and that none of their staff had sent this new invoice or email. This alert thinking saved both companies from the stress and hassle of chasing down stolen funds with the Guards and their insurance companies.

If you ever receive requests outside of normal procedure, even if it appears to come from a known email address and contains an identical copy of an invoice you have seen a hundred times before, always follow up directly with the other party over the phone or in person. It takes just 30 seconds to confirm whether a request for bank details or payment is genuine, and can save you months of problems that might arise from having funds stolen.

Good morning all. Our colleagues in Tullamore Garda Station received 2 calls into station phone from "Amazon". Non Irish female speaking, stating there is a parcel for delivery but there's is €49 due for delivery. She didn't know who's name was on the account and she hung up. Remember these phone numbers constantly vary.

Be aware of calls from a person purporting to be from Amazon. The caller went on to say there was a problem with their account and in order to resolve personal information was required.

Please be wary of scam callers regardless of who they say they represent. Some people are still falling for their stories and providing personal details otherwise they wouldn't continue with their efforts.

About Identifying Whether an E-mail, Text Message or Phone Call is from Amazon

E-mails, text messages or calls from Amazon will never ask you for personal information. If you receive a suspicious (sometimes called phishing) e-mail, text message or call, here are some tips to determine if it's from Amazon.

If you receive a suspicious phone call, email, or text message claiming to be from Amazon, asking for payment, personal information or offering a refund you do not expect, please do not share any personal information, and disconnect any phone call immediately. You can report suspicious spam in Ireland, to your local Garda station. Please also note that Amazon will never ask for your personal information, or ask you to make a payment outside of our website (e.g. via bank transfer, emailing credit card details, etc.). If you received an e-mail regarding an order or Prime membership, or anything that you don't recognise, please forward the e-mail to [email protected] and then delete it. Do not click on any links in such emails.

Few people are still unaware of the recent increase in phone scams. However there's another side to them that is worth raising awareness of. The numbers that they appear to come from lately are frequently "spoofed". That is to say that they don't really originate with those numbers at all, the scammers simply use software to make it appear so. Reports indicate some of these have impersonated genuine government and Garda phone numbers.

Evidently however, they are also using the same regular mobile numbers that they are targeting. For example, yesterday I myself had a scam automated call claiming to be from the Department of Social Protection, but shortly thereafter a genuine call from a puzzled driving instructor from Castlebar who had seemingly received a scam call from my own number. So not only was my number targeted in a scam (supposedly from another Irish mobile), it was then also "spoofed" to try and scam at least one other person. So, two things to bear in mind:

1) If you do get a scam call seemingly from an Irish number, it is highly unlikely that it is really coming from the number appearing on your screen. Simply hang up and do not engage the scammers in any way.

2) If you get a genuine call from someone claiming that someone using your number tried to scam them, do not be too alarmed. It does NOT likely mean that your own security or privacy has been complicated.

In the interest of public health and following government advice, I will be suspending business, effective today. Unfortunately there is only a tiny minority of my jobs that are able to be completed remotely each year, and it is impossible for me to continue on this basis.

I do however plan to be back up and running as soon as we are through this difficult period. In the meantime, I will offer a free consultation and advice service. So if you have any concerns regarding your IT situation, please don't hesitate to get in touch. The most reliable way to reach me is by email:

[email protected]

I'd like to thank all of my clients for their continued support, and I look forward to seeing you all again soon in the not so distant future.

All the best,

Daniel

As Covid-19 spreads, it is the elderly and those with chronic conditions that are most vulnerable. Social distancing is playing a big role in keeping many of these people safe, and self isolation will become more important as time goes on.

However, if the time comes when a vulnerable person in your life needs urgent medical attention, you want to ensure that help arrives as fast as possible. The EIRCODE system is a hugely useful tool for this, and is being used by all of the emergency services. Encourage your friends and family to write down their Eircode and keep it next to their phone. If they ever need to call for an ambulance, having this to hand could save precious minutes.
