I am pleased to announce ‘Heute Ist Der Tag’ is available in full on YouTube, the music video I created in collaboration with the German musician Carstiboy! This video is NSFW and not for the faint of heart.
As usual, I animated this using traditional tools, a brush, pen, and ink. Following this, I scanned each frame and digitally colored. This is without a doubt my most dense animation yet.
This video draws on historical tensions between the Christian and Muslim worlds that tie back to the Crusades and beyond. It follows a fascist pope who dreams of destruction, and quicker seeks out the suffering of others to quench his own pain and fear. In short, the quintessential Catholic!
Having personally grown up in Irish Catholic and Jesuit schools, I feel I have a right to aim my satire clearly towards the double standards and hypocrisy of Christianity and Catholicism. The world has witnessed time and time again the brutality of Christian fascism, the fascism of the Judaeo-Christian worlds perpetuated against that which is perceived as “oriental” or “barbaric”. Despite the Palestinian origin of its mutilated martyr Jesus Christ, the enterprise has been used to racist ends, and Jesus severely whitewashed.
Having been born in 1998, the majority of western pop culture of my life has been heavily informed by 9/11, and much of it contained a Trojan horse of Islamophobia. While working on this, the post-colonial works of the late Palestinian scholar Edward Said informed me greatly, speaking of the shadow of the western world.
It is almost a rite of passage for Irish artists to create a heretic piece of art such as this. Please share if you enjoy. 🧨
