Busy doesn't always mean you're growing in the right direction.

Being busy and growing the right parts of your business are two different things.

This is particularly relevant for retrofit and energy upgrade companies.

You might have plenty of enquiries coming in.

Your teams could be booked out.

Your phone might never stop ringing.

But are those enquiries coming from the projects you actually want?

Maybe you're looking to grow:

- Larger retrofit projects
- Commercial energy upgrades
- Vacant and derelict property renovations
- Relationships with builders and BER assessors
- Higher-margin services

Yet most of your marketing continues to attract the same type of work.

There's nothing wrong with having a busy business.

But if you're trying to move into different markets, your marketing needs to reflect that.

Start with the work you actually want to grow.

Then look at:

- Who buys it
- What they're searching for
- What concerns they have
- What would make them choose you

More activity isn't necessarily the answer.

Attracting more of the right opportunities is.

Are you answering the same questions every week?

If your sales or technical team keeps answering the same questions, there's a good chance your marketing is missing an opportunity.

Think about the conversations happening in your retrofit business every week.

Customers asking about:

- Grant eligibility
- Project costs
- Heat pump suitability
- Timelines
- Installation requirements
- Disruption during the work

Your team probably answers some of these questions dozens of times.

But how many are answered clearly in your content?

That's where I'd start.

Sit down with the people speaking to customers every day.

Ask them:

"What are the questions you find yourself answering over and over again?"

Then turn those answers into useful content.

Not because Google or AI says you need another blog.

Because these are real questions from real potential customers.

You're already doing the hard part.

You have the knowledge.

Now make that knowledge easier for people to find.

Show the commercial projects you want more of.

Want to win more commercial energy-upgrade projects?

Start by looking at the work you're showcasing.

If a business owner or facilities manager finds your company online, what evidence can they see that you've handled projects like theirs?

A list of services is useful.

But real projects can tell a much stronger story.

Show them:

- What the customer needed
- The challenges involved
- What solutions you recommended
- How the work was carried out
- How disruption was managed
- What results were achieved

Where possible, include real figures.

Energy savings.

Project timelines.

Before and after comparisons.

And photographs of the actual work.

You don't need to turn every project into a massive case study.

Sometimes a straightforward explanation with a few good photographs is enough.

If you want more of a particular type of project, make sure people can see that you've done that kind of work before.

Your previous projects could be some of your strongest marketing assets.

Stop making potential partners figure everything out.

Here's something worth checking if you want more B2B work in the energy upgrade industry.

How easy is it for another business to understand how they can work with you?

Imagine a BER assessor finds your company online.

They have a customer who needs a heat pump or a full energy upgrade.

But your content only talks about services for homeowners.

There's nothing explaining:

- Who you partner with
- What types of projects you handle
- How referrals work
- Who they should contact
- What support you provide

So what happens?

They might call you.

Or they might find another company that makes the process clearer.

If partnerships are an important part of your business growth strategy, make them visible.

Don't assume people know you want to work with them.

Explain who you help and how the relationship works.

Sometimes removing a little uncertainty is enough to get the right conversation started.

Here's a question I'd encourage every retrofit and energy upgrade business owner to ask.

Does your marketing reflect the business you have today, or the business you're trying to build?

Because they aren't always the same thing.

Your marketing should reflect where you want the business to go.

Maybe you've spent years working on domestic energy upgrades.

You've built a good reputation.

You have plenty of enquiries coming in.

But now you want to grow your B2B side.

More commercial projects.

More relationships with industry professionals.

More of the work that makes sense for your business.

The problem is that your marketing is still focused almost entirely on what you've always done.

That's where I'd start making changes.

- Identify the projects you want more of
- Understand the people making those decisions
- Look at what they're searching for
- Show relevant experience
- Create content that answers their questions

You don't necessarily need to abandon what's already working.

You need to make sure your marketing supports where you want to go next.

We start with what you actually want to grow, then build the marketing around it.

I don’t think marketing teams should be sitting in a room guessing what customers care about.

Your sales team can already tell you.

Every week they hear:

- The same questions
- The same objections
- The same reasons people hesitate
- The same misunderstandings
- The same reasons projects are won or lost

That is marketing data.

But far too often, very little of it makes its way into the website, marketing strategy or content.

When I work with an new business, one of the first things I do is speak to:

- Sales
- Directors
- Project managers
- Technical staff

Find out what they’re hearing.

Extract what they know.

Then combine that with current marketing data, competitor research and what customers are actually doing online.

That’s where some of your strongest content comes from.

Not sitting there wondering:

“What should we post this week?”

Answer the questions real customers are already asking.

Your sales team knows the customer.

Your marketing should be listening.

12/10/2026

One of the first questions I’m starting to ask businesses is:

What work would you happily say no to?

And what work would you like twice as much of?

Because “we need more leads” is often the wrong place to start.

Most retrofit and energy upgrade companies are already busy.

Some are flat out.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re busy with the work they want more of.

Maybe you want to grow:

- Commercial solar
- Larger energy upgrade projects
- Community projects
- B2B partnerships
- Specific higher-margin services

If sales is chasing one type of customer while your marketing keeps attracting another, something is disconnected.

Before deciding you need more SEO, content, ads or a new website, I think there’s a much better question to answer first.

What do you actually want to grow?

Once that’s clear, build the marketing around it.

Not the other way around.

09/10/2026

Budget 2027 has changed the commercial solar conversation.

And if commercial solar is something your business wants more of, your marketing should probably change with it.

As I’m sure you likely know this already… Support is increasing to 45% of eligible costs, with a proposed cap of €325,200 for a limited period.

That gives businesses another reason to look at projects they may have previously put on hold.

But here’s the opportunity for energy upgrade companies.

There are businesses out there that:

- Looked at solar before and decided the numbers didn’t stack up
- Put a project on hold
- Didn’t know what support was available
- Haven’t looked at it in years

Your sales team now has a reason to restart those conversations.

Your marketing should support them.

- Update your commercial content
- Explain the changes in plain English alongside the technical info
- Show the business case
- Give sales useful content to send prospects
- Give previous enquiries a reason to look again

Changes like these creates lots of opportunity.

The businesses that react quickly will be in a much better position when customers start running the numbers again.

09/10/2026

One good B2B relationship could be worth far more than a single retrofit project.

That's something energy-upgrade companies should be thinking about when planning their growth.

Take a plumber, BER assessor or building contractor.

They might work with dozens of customers throughout the year.

Some of those customers will need services they don't provide themselves.

That's where a reliable partnership becomes valuable.

But here's the important bit.

Why would they keep choosing your company?

- You respond when they need help

- You provide quick, clear quotations

- You give practical technical advice

- You communicate throughout the project

- You look after their customers

- You make their job easier

These are the things that can build long-term working relationships.

And they're exactly the things your marketing should be highlighting.

Instead of simply saying:

"We install heat pumps and provide energy upgrades."

Explain why another business would benefit from working with you.

Because the opportunity isn't necessarily one more project.

It could be a relationship that generates work for years.

08/10/2026

If your online content speaks mainly to homeowners, don’t be surprised if most enquiries come from homeowners.

That sounds obvious.

But I see it all the time.

A retrofit or energy upgrade company wants more commercial work.

Yet everything online talks about:

- Home energy upgrades

- Domestic grants

- Solar

- Homeowners

- Residential projects

Then they wonder why business owners, facilities managers and property managers aren’t getting in touch.

Commercial buyers have different priorities.

They’re thinking about:

- Cost savings

- Payback

- Disruption to the business

- Compliance

- Timelines

- Scale

- Who can actually manage the project properly

Different customer.

Different questions.

Different search behaviour.

Different content.

If you want to grow commercial energy upgrades, your marketing must speak directly to that buyer.

You can’t expect them to read between the lines and assume you do it.
