Grateful to everyone who came and supported, to friends coming to say hi and to my supportive and lovely mates Kayla δΉ‹ for sharing a table and bringing the jokes. So grateful to have met a few years ago and learning about Nokshi Katha. After joining 2 terms of her Nokshi Katha workshops at St Margaret's House, we have finally collaborated together to create this zine to showcase this Bengali heritage craft of storytelling through needle and threads.

This zine gives you an introduction to Nokshi Katha and showcases 5 Nokshi patterns. As we would really love for you to try it out, we have included a piece of upcycled fabric that has a sample border for you to try out.

This zine will be debuting this weekend at the amazing 𝕻 𝖆 π–Œ π–Š 𝕸 𝖆 π–˜ 𝖙 π–Š 𝖗 π–˜ zine fair 🎊

🧡Celebrating Nokshi Katha at St Margaret's House πŸͺ‘

Nokshi Katha, an embroidery art/craft form originating from Bangladesh, is a meditative and beautiful storytelling craft using upcycled old clothes and fabrics and the pieces are mostly passed down through generations.

For 10 weeks in Spring, a group of woman met up weekly to learn Nokshi Katha and each of them embroidered their own textile piece on the theme of Women Empowerment, facilitated by The group created a supportive and happy space to share stories, culture and skills.

We got to showcase our textile pieces at St Margaret's House on the 25th July 2026, where there were drop in workshops, which the women peer taught participants Nokshi Katha patterns and a Mehndi table. It was a wonderful day of celebration for the group amongst friends and the public, and we all wore sari.

My piece was inspired by all the women I met weekly for 10 weeks, I always felt supported, warm and safe with them so I want to dedicate my piece to them. Each set of hands are of the women in different stages of stitching, surrounded by a decorative supportive Nokshi Katha circle.

Next Sat 25th July 2026, I'll be exhibiting my embroidery piece alongside an amazing bunch of women whom I got to spend 10 weeks with at .margarets.house, come along and see our textile pieces, have a natter or even try some nokshi katha embroidery 🌞
margarets.house : A day of celebrating Nokshi Katha embroidery as a heritage craft of solidarity, connection and storytelling in this collaborative group exhibition and drop-in workshop.

Originating from Bangladesh, Nokshi Katha or β€˜Kantha’ embroidery is one of the oldest forms of embroidery in the world. It is a beautiful and meditative craft which upcycles old cloth and materials such as saris into elaborate and brightly coloured embroidered pieces. This exhibition and workshop will showcase Nokshi Katha embroidery skilfully crafted by a group of women as part of the Nokshi Katha embroidery course at St Margaret’s House. The group meet weekly for 10-weeks, facilitated by sustainable fashion and textile designer Many members of the group have never partaken in Nokshi Katha embroidery previously, but through the course have become skilled embroiders and developed a love for the craft. Like many textile traditions, Nokshi Katha celebrates the creativity and resourcefulness of women gathering in community. Over the term, the group have created a supportive space of sharing stories, cultures and skills, making both collective and individual pieces that express hope and solidarity. The theme of this summer term is 'Women's Empowerment'.

Participants of the course will display their Nokshi Katha textile pieces as part of the exhibition in The Chapel.

There will also be a drop-in workshop between 12noon-4pm where you can learn how to stitch using Nokshi Katha embroidery methods, peer-taught by the participants of the course. If you would like to attend the workshop please book a free 1-hour slot ticket, although you may stay longer if you wish.

No experience is necessary. All materials will be provided, but you are also welcome to bring your own fabric or clothes to stitch onto. Link in bio.

Sharing some cards that were made at the workshop that I held in April, I'll be back there again facilitating on Tues 23rd June, 6-7.30pm if you're interested in joining a chill and friendly workshop 🌞

♻️ Join us on a meditative and hands on craft workshop where you’ll create your own unique greeting card by weaving upcycled sweet/snack wrappers on to the cover.

🍬 We will be using wrappers that I have saved from going into landfill, letβ€˜s appreciate the wrapper packaging designs by giving them a second life. You’re welcome to bring your own clean sweet/snack wrappers to use on your card, be it for the design, nostalgia or culture feels.

About the facilitator:
kamipaper is an upcycle bookbinder, community artist and arts facilitator. They care about the environment, sustainability and are interested in the East and South East Asian (ESEA) diaspora stories, where they weave bits of their British ESEA culture into their works when possible. They have made a zine about a family-run Chinese takeaway in East London and was a community co-curator for Nana’s House – an interactive East London living room installation at London College of Fashion in 2023.
