How much power does ChatGPT use?

Have you ever wondered about the energy consumed by ChatGPT?

Recently a data science expert tried to estimate the figure with 2 different approaches: a top-down one, i.e. finding the total energy consumed per day and dividing it by the number of queries; the other one is a bottom-up way: estimating the number of FLOPS per query and then deducing the total power disbursed.

The results are pretty consistent from the two different approaches. On average, this digital ‘wizard’ sips about 0.0017 to 0.0024 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per chat. That's like having your good old incandescent light bulb running for a few minutes!

But hang on a sec, what does this mean for your carbon footprint? Well, we may not be seeing a significant impact at this early stage. With the expanding adoption of AI in different domains of business, it could become an alarming issue. Let’s hope the geniuses behind the scenes are cooking up a greener AI future.
