Collidoscope Berlin

Collidoscope Berlin Collidoscope Berlin () is a democratic and inclusive view of the many peoples, spaces, and settings that constitute the modern city. Ideas?

Collidoscope Berlin was founded by Sophia Burton and Kelly Miller in April 2013. Collidoscope explores immigration, diversity, and difference through stories and analyses that begin in Berlin but do not end here. Through the lens of migration, i.e. the movement and coming together of people, we can understand more about what makes 'us' who we are. Cities, as a reflection of 'the we', are a good pl

Thank you Eltabb members for joining us yesterday morning for such a fruitful workshop on migration, difference, and bias! We hope our discussion has spurred curiosity and a desire for continued learning.
To get you started, check out this interview with social psychologist Mahzarin Banaji on how our stereotypes of others can be transformed into something good. And, as always, send us your comments and questions (here, as pm, or to [email protected]).

The emerging science of implicit bias is one of the most promising fields for animating the human change that makes social change possible. The social psychologist Mahzarin Banaji is one of its primar

NEW ARTICLE: Are women truly free to dress how they choose, in today's Europe or in today's U.S.? A trip to a Berlin nightclub might suggest that, yes, civil liberties include even that glittery bikini. But what about glittery headscarves?
Hijab is a global practice with representation in fashion and pop culture. So, why is it, among other forms of Islamic dress, still policed in Europe? In this article, we apply a little feminist and historical perspective to the age-old question of a woman's right to choose.

As Muslim refugees who choose to wear hijab become a lasting part of the societies of those European states that have taken them in, their right to be different must be defended. Most importantly, we must defend the right of women to choose. It is this choice that makes women free. This is why femin...

Today, we're hitting the streets of Athens to ask locals and tourists alike what they think of the so-called refugee and migrant crisis, what they are worried about this coming year, and what an increasingly diverse Greece hopes to be its future. Oh, and Obama is here. Good timing for these two Americans.

In an age of increased mobility, rising rents, and privatized education, what does "right to the city" mean to you? In the following publication for The SoJo Journal, we collaborated with two friends in the US and Colombia to look at ways that cities can work for all the people who live there, especially those who may not be so visible. We offer food for thought from Berlin, of course! Free download available.

Good morning, Berlin. Like you, we woke up to the results of the regional vote for our dear city-state and were saddened by the 's success. With 14% of the vote in a divided docket, the right-wing (xenophobic) party challenges the ranks of Berlin's traditional party structure. It also points to a persistent cleft between East and West in the city, as this map demonstrates.

We have work to do. For us, it starts with more inclusive storytelling.

The GSBTB Open Art Shelter is setting up makeup workshops for women at the Tempelhof refugee shelter. “Not because we believe that natural beauty is not enough, but because we observe how important physical appearance and some make-up extravaganza is for the self-esteem of the women we work with.” They’re looking for makeup and cosmetics DONATIONS, as well as a MAKEUP ARTIST interested in joining the project.

"We are in need of foundation, powder and concealer in dark skin tones (which are harder to find), as many of our ladies have beautiful darker types of complexion. However, we obviously need all kinds of coloured cosmetics; eye shadow, mascara, eyeliner, lipstick, nail polish, well.. you know, everything that’s glittery, shiny and makes you feel like a million dollars!” Donations or new and nearly-new cosmetics can be dropped of at the GSBTB Office, Lenaustrasse 4, 12047 Berlin. (We also always need more fabric and wool for knitting and craft projects - more women are joining all the time!).

If you own a shop or cafe that could become a donation drop-off point, please email us: [email protected]

We always love the inspiring and fun get-togethers hosted by our friends at Give Something Back To Berlin, but yesterday's took the cake with words from the State Minister of Immigration Aydan Özoguz and Neukölln Mayor Franziska Giffey, delicious food made by refugees, and innovative and intercultural musicians. Thanks for the beautiful evening, Neukölln!
