InFocusAshaiman: Housing in the new Ashaiman

All clear! housing, which used to be a major challenge in the municipality, is also experiencing great transformation. Hitherto, Ashaiman, which could not boast of any planned housing apart from the New Quarters near Roman Down, is currently home to several planned and gated estates including the Tema Communities 21 and 22 and the Afariwa estates. Also, many suburbs such as Lebanon, Jericho, Zenu, Roman Down, New, and Official Towns continue to see relatively good housing.

Besides, the cost of decent accommodation, comparatively, it is the cheapest in the Greater Accra Region. This has led to the influx of all manner of persons to the municipality.

If you think of relocating, Ashaiman should be the next stop.

Where do you live? Within a city or on the outskirts? In a slum or an orderly arranged neighborhood? Are you proud to tell people where you happen to rest after a long day of stress or do you belong to the growing number of people who find the closest cool neighborhood to rep as your own? There may be many legitimate reasons to justify your answers to these questions and of course, first impressions last and where you live plays a pivotal role so we tend to understand even before you speak.

AshaimanToday is a program designed to narrate the untold success stories of Ashaiman beyond the preconceived ideas of the past.

Within many of our communities are established institutions, celebrated personalities, and a growing educated youth who can turn the ship in the right direction and lead the change for a clean, organized, secure community but have we done enough? Can our communities be proud of us like how we pride ourselves with the closest by ours? Will we be willing to allow our children to live and work in these communities? This and many answered questions will be addressed through this program.

The story of the new Ashaiman will depend on you as a catalyst of change from down to up as we put our leaders on the spot for change from top to down. May your choice of association with where you live reflects the hope of a new city and not the fear of stigmatization for being true to where you live.

Ashaiman has come afar. We had moved from selling iced water in rubber buckets, sitting face to face in Datsun cars to Tema harbor to buy fish. Truck pushing has also been taken over by motorbikes and tricycles. There has also been a fair representation of banks and other financial institutions in town. The main market has seen some expansion, the Cluster of schools walls have also been repaired and extended to avoid the rampant jumping by miscreants.

Administratively, we have a Municipal Assembly administering the town, unlike the days when people had to trek to the Tema Municipal Assembly in Tema for related businesses.
Truly, Ashaiman has changed for good and I am proud to have gone through all these changes. Wherever you are, from Tulaku, market Square, Fitter line, Taboo line, Tsinai Agbe, Zongo Laka, Roman, Night Market, Asensu Bar, Official Town, Taifa, Middle East, Barrier, Afariwaa, Christian Village, Newtown, Valco Flat, Mali Estate, Jericho, Lebanon Zones 2-5, Zenu, Atadeka, New York, Washington, Kubekro, Israel, Newland, Auntie Alaba, Appolonia, Japan City or a settlement yet to be named, this town has seen some great times and I am proud to be in Ashaiman.

InFocusGhana: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE E-LEVY

The Minister of Finance, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta is in the coming days expected to announce the operational date for the Electronic Transfer Levy Bill (E-Levy) Bill which was assented by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo yesterday.

Parliament approved the bill last Tuesday after the Minority had walked out of Parliament as part of their avowed protest against the bill.

The bill initially imposed a 1.75 per cent tax on all electronic transactions and money transfers, but the rate was reduced to 1.5 per cent before its passage.

As part of the bill, any transfer to or from a mobile money account or from a bank account of a person will be subject to the tax. These include:

1. Transfers done on the same mobile money network For example sending money from your MTN Momo wallet to another. person's MTN Momo wallet.

2. Transfers from one mobile money network to a recipient on another network For example, sending money from your MTN Momo wallet to another person's TIGO Cash wallet.

3. Transfers from bank accounts to mobile money accounts: For example, Kofi transfers money from his CBG bank account to Ama's MTN mobile money wallet.

4. Transfers from mobile money accounts to bank accounts: For example, Esi transfers money from her Vodafone Cash money wallet to Yaw's GCB bank account.

5. Bank transfers on a digital platform or application which originate from a bank account belonging to an individual: For example, Kwame transferring money from his NIB Bank account. to Akua's Prudential Bank account.
