It is only mid-July but Christmas planning season is not as far off as it feels.

If you run a shop, café, pub or hotel in North Wales, here is something worth knowing: you could use an AI tool to rough out your autumn and Christmas promotions in an afternoon. A draft calendar, some social post ideas, a few email subject lines for key dates like Halloween weekend, Bonfire Night and the Christmas run-up.

The AI will not know your business, so the first draft will need work. But having something to edit is a lot easier than starting from nothing. You read it through, bin what does not fit, and rewrite it in your own voice, adding the stuff only you know: your local suppliers, your regulars, what makes your place special.

That part is still yours. The AI just saves you the staring-at-a-blank-page bit.

A quick idea if you have started using AI tools in your business and you are not sure whether they are genuinely saving you time.

Try keeping a one-line daily note. Just jot down what you used AI for and roughly how long it saved you. Nothing complicated, your phone's notes app is fine.

After a month you will have an honest picture. If the weekly saving is not adding up to at least a couple of hours, that is useful to know. It probably means either the task is not a good fit for AI, or the way you are describing the task to the tool needs a bit of work.

For a small business in North Wales, two to five hours a week back is a realistic and worthwhile target. That could be time spent on customer emails, chasing invoices, writing product descriptions, or drafting a social post.

A simple tally is the difference between guessing and knowing.

If you want to chat about which parts of your week AI could realistically help with, have a look at northwales.ai.

Thinking about trying AI in your business but not sure whether to go free or paid?

Here is a straightforward take.

The free version of ChatGPT could handle a surprising amount of what most small business owners want to do first: writing emails, drafting social posts, summarising documents, putting together a quote template. Worth trying before you spend anything.

Paid tools tend to make more sense once you want AI to connect with the rest of what you do. Automating a follow-up, working with your own files, linking to your bookkeeping software. That is when a subscription could start paying for itself.

A couple of things to keep in mind:

- You are not locked in to anything by starting free.
- Always have someone check what the AI produces. It gets things wrong and your reputation is on the line, not the tool's.
- Two to three hours a week is a realistic starting target, not a transformation promise.

North Wales AI is there to give local businesses a plain-English steer on all of this, no hard sell. Have a look at northwales.ai if you want to know more.

Quick one for any trades or service businesses in North Wales.

You could use AI to turn your rough job notes into a proper, itemised quote. Dictate what you need after a visit, materials, time, extras, and a simple prompt structures it into something clear that your customer can actually understand.

You still check all the numbers yourself before it goes out. The AI just does the tidying up.

It is one of those small things that could save you an hour or so a week and make your quotes look a lot more professional in the process.

More on how this works at northwales.ai. Happy to answer any questions in the comments.

Sunday evening and your head's full of it?

Quotes to chase, a VAT deadline creeping up, a rota that won't sort itself, a supplier still not replied.

Here's something you could try. Open a free AI tool and just type it all out. No neat formatting, no structure, just a brain dump in plain English. Then ask it to sort the list by urgency and give you a rough plan for the week.

You stay in charge. You tell it what matters. It hands you back something you can actually work with instead of a blank page and a foggy head.

It won't know your business the way you do. But it doesn't need to.

If you have ever sat staring at a blank grant application or tender document, here is something worth knowing.

A North Wales business could use an AI tool like ChatGPT to produce a rough first draft, then go through it and swap out the generic bits for real detail: your actual figures, your specific services, your local context.

It is not going to write the whole thing for you. It does not know your business, and it certainly does not know the funding criteria for Welsh Government schemes. But it gives you something to work from, which is half the battle.

Honest take: AI gets you maybe 40% of the way there. The rest is still on you. That is fine. It is the detail you add that makes the difference.

Quick one for anyone with a networking breakfast or coffee morning coming up.

Most of us just show up and hope for the best. But you could spend ten minutes with an AI tool the evening before and go in a fair bit more prepared.

Ask it what kinds of people are likely to be there. Ask it to suggest a few useful questions based on what you do. Ask it to write you a short intro that actually sounds like you, not a business card.

You will probably change bits of it. That is fine. The point is you are not standing there at 8am trying to remember how to describe your own business.

The chat still has to be real. AI just helps you walk in ready.

Got a folder of lovely customer emails you have never done anything with?

Here is something a North Wales business could try.

Paste one into ChatGPT and ask it to turn the main point into two or three plain sentences, the sort of thing that would sit nicely on a website or in a post. It takes half a minute.

Then check it reads right, and drop the customer a quick message: 'We turned your kind words into this short snippet. Would you be happy for us to use it?'

That is genuinely all there is to it. Permission first, always. The customer said it; AI helped tidy it; you approved it; they sign it off.

A simple, honest way to get more use out of the good feedback you are already getting.

Something practical for anyone running a tourism business in North Wales.

If you get enquiries from overseas visitors, some of them will arrive in German, French, Spanish, Dutch, or something else entirely. A small business does not always have a quick way to understand exactly what is being asked, let alone reply in the visitor's own language.

With AI, that becomes a lot more manageable.

You could paste the message into a tool like ChatGPT, ask it to translate and pick out the key details, then draft a reply in the visitor's language covering whatever they actually asked about. Dates, availability, whether the dog can come, whatever it is.

You read it, check it, change anything that does not sound like you, and send it. The whole thing takes a few minutes.

No specialist software needed. Just a practical use of something that is already available.

Something worth thinking about if you run a B&B, holiday let, or small hotel in North Wales.

You probably answer the same handful of questions every single week. Parking, dogs, check-in times, early bag drop. Totally reasonable questions, but they take time, and they arrive at all hours.

Here is what a business like yours could do with AI. You write up your own answers to the 20 or so questions you get asked most. The AI uses that document as its reference and drafts replies for you, in your own tone, using your actual policies. You read each draft before it goes anywhere. If it needs a tweak, you make it. If it looks good, you send it.

Nothing automated, nothing unsupervised. Just a draft waiting for you rather than a blank reply box at 11pm.

If that sounds useful, have a look at northwales.ai or send me a message and we can talk through how it might work for your business.
