I started Brownlow Brown Designs in 2017 and I’ve been on a bit of a journey with it over the years. It was originally a side hustle alongside working part time in my charity job in programme communications. Initially I started with the idea of creating products that highlighted the problem of plastic pollution, but pivoted after I remembered how fun it was experiment with words and typography (something I’d originally discovered way back when at university).

Shortly after returning from my second maternity leave my role was made redundant so for a while I worked full time on Brownlow Brown Designs. Not gonna lie, I found it really hard, lacked in confidence and was massively impacted by a young child who DID NOT SLEEP. I also struggled with the isolation of working for yourself. After running out of money (😬) I did a few part time jobs in hospitality but eventually realised I wanted to return to full-time employment, so two years ago I went back to working in programme management for education charities.

Brownlow Brown Designs has continued to tick along quietly in the meantime. For a while I stressed about not doing all the marketing and promotion you “should” do as a small business owner, but since I’ve let go and just popped a post up when I feel like it I’ve been much more content!

I’d love a bit more time to spend designing new things and shouting about them, so who knows what the future holds…
