Every salesperson has heard these four words.
"We'll think about it."
Sometimes they're genuine. Sometimes they're just a polite way to say NO.
Either way, they shouldn't be the outcome you're aiming for.
Early in my career, I used to leave meetings feeling encouraged whenever I heard those words.
The presentation had gone well. The customer was engaged and there were smiles around the table.
I thought I was one step closer to winning the business, but then I'd wait...and wait. More often than not, nothing happened. Over time, I realised something important.
"We'll think about it" isn't a destination. It's a signal that there are still questions unanswered. Perhaps the customer doesn't fully understand the value Or perhaps the real business problem hasn't been uncovered Or perhaps the decision-maker wasn't in the room Or perhaps there simply isn't enough urgency to act.
That's one of the reasons the SPIN Selling methodology has stood the test of time. It reminds us that great sales conversations aren't built around presentations. They're built around understanding.
=> Understanding the customer's Situation.
=> Exploring the real Problem.
=> Discussing the Implications of leaving it unresolved.
=> And helping the customer recognise the Need-Payoff of taking action.
When those conversations happen well, "We'll think about it" often changes into something far more valuable: "Let's agree the next steps."

I'm curious...What's the most valuable lesson you've learned after hearing a customer say, "We'll think about it"?
