Japan’s automotive market has long been a major player within the APAC region. But 2025 sales trends show this could be changing.

Supply disruptions, a shifting powertrain mix, and diverging consumer preferences across APAC are all reshaping the competitive landscape in ways that will define the next decade.

In Japan, domestic sales grew just 3.1% between 2021 and 2025 — significantly behind the global rate of 11.8%.

JATO Advisory’s analysts have examined five years of sales data across 10 major APAC markets to reveal what 2025’s trends mean for Japanese OEMs and for the region as a whole.

This month’s Talk Auto dived into one of the industry’s biggest shifts: the rapid rise of new car brands across Europe and what it means for retailers and consumers.

JATO’s Paul Hilton, Head of Retail, joined Philip Nothard to unpack how growing competition from Chinese OEMs is reshaping retail strategies, influencing buyer behaviour, and opening up fresh partnership opportunities for forward‑thinking dealers.

With more brands entering the market than ever, consumers gain choice and retailers gain new ways to differentiate and grow.

With SUVs now accounting for 54.8% of new car sales in India, the increase is playing into retailers' hands and tyre manufacturers too.

But it is not just the types of tyres and tread design that companies need to be cognisant of; it’s continuing to meet consumer demand.

Tyre brands that use vehicle parc intelligence from JATO Dynamics will continue to be competitive. https://tinyurl.com/4cn53t74

Mercedes' Drive Pilot is approved for use in Germany and several US states, and when it's active, the legal liability for an accident sits with Mercedes, not the driver. That's genuinely new territory and it only exists because UNECE Regulation R157 created a framework for certifying Level 3 systems in the first place.

The regulatory gap in general is still significant though. In Italy and several other European countries, law requires a licensed driver to be in control of the vehicle at all times. The wording hasn't been updated to account for a car capable of making its own decisions about speed and braking.

JATO Advisory team analysed the European framework what needs to change before this technology is available at scale: https://tinyurl.com/ykam7kyc

𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮’𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗩 𝗖𝗢𝟮 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗮𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗔𝗙𝗘 𝗜𝗜𝗜.

Rising kerb weights from 1082 kg to 1170 kg are increasing pressure on OEMs, with many still above CAFE III limits.

SUV growth, safety features, and larger powertrains are driving emissions higher, while brands with stronger EV and hybrid mixes (Tata, Hyundai, Toyota, Suzuki) are closing the gap faster.

With a 91.7 g/km target ahead and tougher CAFE IV rules approaching, rapid electrification and weight reduction will be essential for compliance. https://tinyurl.com/5xwwwys9

Based on 15,000 km a year, Mexicans buying a subcompact sedan spend around MXN $560,000 over five years. But the real cost goes deeper.

30% is interest charges. 18% can be apportioned to depreciation. 17% is down to fuel costs.

Many of these costs can be reduced:

• Compare financing options to cut interest
• Maintain the vehicle to boost resale value
• Avoid SUVs if fuel efficiency is a priority

Subcompact sedans also offer competitive pricing and plenty of choice, a strong financial case for Mexican drivers.
