After a recent update to the Draw Polygon tool in Focus 2D, there are now two ways to create regular polygons: click and drag, which makes it hard to judge the exact side length, and set exact side length, which does exactly what it says on the tin.

A teacher asked me today whether it’s possible to set up a Techsoft-style crossed drawing grid with snap-to enabled. I was pleased to report that this functionality is already built into Focus 2D.

Focus 2D Update: We’ve just added a new “Engraving Font” tool to the left-hand menu. You may need to clear your browser cache before the update appears.

An engraving font (also known as a Hershey or single-line font) is a type of vector (stroke) font made from simple line segments (and sometimes arcs), rather than filled shapes like modern TrueType / OpenType fonts.

These fonts were originally developed in the 1960s by Dr. Allen V. Hershey for early computer graphics and pen plotters (machines that physically draw using pens).

Modern fonts often don’t work well for engraving or plotting because they’re designed as filled outlines. This can cause the machine to trace both the inside and outside edges of the letterforms—effectively drawing each character twice.
