World diabetes day on the 14th coming up
Este Haim πππ
For as long as I remember I've been: angry about being a type 1 diabetic, unnaccepting of it and saw myself as just "a type one diabetic" rather than a person "living with diabetes"
- a small but very important perspective to have, when your first job before anything else is managing a chronic condition.
It's easy to feel like you're reduced down to your illness, that it has overcome you, defeated you or held you back from achieving what you want to achieve (people tell you that it doesn't stop you doing what you want to, because they want to see you achieving but it can be very debilitating - it's classed as an invisible disability)
It continues to be something that I battle with and struggle with, both mentally and physically, every day. Some days more than others, but: I'm lucky to have gained a much better support network over the last year or so, found a lovely bunch of people in a diabetes support group, discovered online friends living with type 1 diabetes to talk to and my perspective around my health has improved through this support
