Why can't we just ALWAYS serve video?

tl;dr serving video is complicated!

People have been talking about incorporating video into standard media buys FOR YEARS. But there are many websites out there that don't support video in digital display ad placements for loads of reasons (platform restrictions, higher costs, UX issues, etc.)

But you know what basically every website, browser, or device can support? HTML5 banners - you could probably load them with a potato! And because of their lightweight and universal compatibility, HTML5 banners are uniquely positioned to reach vast audiences, reliably.

Animation is key to catching the eye of task-oriented digital display users. But not all animated formats are made equal.

Compared to HTML5, GIFs are:
🚫 Heavier in file size
🚫 Clunkier in animations
🚫 Less compatible with browsers
🚫 Are limited in visual quality

Don't throw your ad spend in the trash. Maximize your media spend with HTML5!

Choosing the right format sets the foundation for a digital display campaign.

Common digital display ad formats include:
- Statics (PNG/JPGs)
- GIFs
- HTML5 ads (the gold standard)
- Video (typically requires a rich media buy)

When choosing ad formats, understanding your audience will help you make an educated decision on which format is right for you.

In the digital display environment, most users are task-oriented (meaning they're focused on reading an article, or following a recipe). So, digital display ads must be attractive enough to distract users from their task.

The best attention-grabbing strategy is ✨animation✨. Moving objects catch our attention for brief moments, so choosing a format that allows for animation sets your campaign up for success. That means 🚫 no statics!

That leaves you with GIFs, HTML5 ads, and video, which we'll talk about more on Tuesday in part 2!
