How do we move from talking about patient safety to truly embedding it in everyday practice?

With a prime focus on initiatives like 'Marthas Rule', this article from NHS England focuses on how the Patient Safety Strategy, released in 2019, is progressing.

💫 Improved medicine safety
💫 Increased learning from incidents
💫 More patient safety training

🟰 Harm prevented and a stronger safety culture across NHS

A firm reminder that patient safety isn't one programme, it's a culture.

Patient safety is now being discussed more openly and consistently than ever before, where everyone can play a part. Where staff, patients and families feel empowered to speak up and be heard.

The real test isn't whether trusts have adopted the framework, but whether it's leading to lasting improvements in patient safety.

But from this latest progress update, it feels like we're heading in the right direction 💙

Healthcare improvement isn't just about introducing new ideas, it's about creating the conditions that allow improvement to succeed.

THIS Institute's latest article explains that governance and leadership are not separate concepts, they're complementary.

Governance provides the structures, accountability and strategic direction, while leadership creates the culture, engagement and motivation needed to turn strategy into meaningful change.

What we found most useful is the emphasis on thinking across the whole healthcare system:
💡 National policy, regulation, incentives, organisational and board leadership.
💡Frontline teams, clinical leadership and psychological safety.

Improvement is most effective when these levels are aligned, rather than operating in isolation.

Other points included are:
🔹 Prioritising quality and safety at board level.
🔹 Combining performance data with patient stories to build compelling cases for change.
🔹 Learning from other organisations.
🔹 Creating safe environments where teams have shared ownership and feel confident to speak up.

For anyone involved in quality improvement, patient safety, leadership or healthcare management, it's a concise and practical guide that translates evidence into actionable advice.
