Recently I assisted a client to upgrade an application that tracked dog breeding and a magazine subscription service. I took her legacy spider web graph which was getting disorganised and converted it into the much more readable anchor-buoy structure.

Not only is it easier to manage but this structure provides many performance benefits.

❌❌ Don’t use copy and paste!

Copy and paste is the way we are used to moving data around our computer. But what happens if you are in the middle of that super critical script and your user decides to copy a cake recipe from the internet? You could end up with a lot of unwanted data in your file and potentially break your relationships.

Instead, get yourself familiar with variables. ✅ The set variable script step is extremely powerful for moving data. You can pair this with the set field command (like the paste command) or have your variable automatically entered when creating related records using the auto-entry calculations!

A helpful tip when creating your tables. Try to think of each unique entity and decide if it will suit your requirements. For example, you may have a table for teachers, a table for students and a table for parents and guardians. This is called normalising the data. But what if a teacher is also a parent? Or what if a parent would also like to be a student? In this case, you may notice that you may be collecting the same information for each group and simply have a people table. From there, you can classify the data using a classifications table.
