Ask yourself:
is a copy of your data kept somewhere separate from your main network? Is one copy immutable or offline, so nothing can alter it even in a worst case? And when did anyone last test that a restore actually works?

If any of those feel uncertain, that's a good, low-effort thing to sort out before it becomes urgent.

Have a good weekend, and if you want a second pair of eyes on any of this, we're always happy to have that conversation.

Here's why we always point people towards the same rule when they ask about backups.

It's called 3-2-1-1-0: three copies of your data, on two different types of storage, with one copy kept off-site, one copy that nothing can alter or delete even if your main systems are compromised, and zero errors when you actually test a restore.

That last part is the one that catches people out. Plenty of businesses have backups running quietly in the background for years without anyone ever checking they'd actually work in a real recovery. The only way to know is to test it.

If you can't remember the last time anyone tested a restore, that's probably worth changing.

We get asked about backups a lot, so here's what actually tends to go wrong.

It's rarely that a business has no backup at all. It's that the backup was reachable from the same network as everything else, so when ransomware hit, it took the backup down too.

Or nobody had ever actually tried restoring from it, so nobody knew it worked until it was too late.

The fix isn't expensive new software, it's making sure at least one copy of your data sits somewhere ransomware genuinely cannot reach, and checking every so often that a restore actually works.

Worth putting five minutes aside this week to check where your backups sit.

Here's a number worth sitting with:
UK businesses reported over 26 ransomware attacks a month between April 2025 and March 2026, with average losses of around £270,000 per incident.
Over half of the businesses hit were small or mid-sized, the same size as most of the companies we work with.

The businesses that recover fastest almost always have one thing in common: backups that were kept separate from the rest of their network, with at least one copy that ransomware simply couldn't reach or change.

If it's been a while since anyone checked your backups actually restore properly (not just that they run), it's worth putting on the list this month.

Questions about where to start? Always happy to have that conversation.

Switching to VoIP isn't just about keeping your phones working after 2027

it also means your team can take business calls from anywhere, on any device, with none of the old landline limitations.

A heads-up for anyone still on a traditional business phone line:
prices on those old lines are expected to double by October 2026

well before the network even switches off in 2027.

Worth a quick check of your setup now rather than later.

Did you know the UK's old landline network is switching off for good on 31 January 2027?

If your business phones, alarms or card machines still run on a traditional copper line, it's worth checking you're covered before then.

We'll be sharing more this week on what to do about it.
