Not all testing takes place on site! ☀️🎶

I’ve picked up the new Sonos Playto put it through its paces and see how it performs in a real-world outdoor environment.

First impressions are excellent – solid build quality, simple setup and plenty of volume. The real test will be battery life, connectivity, outdoor performance and overall sound quality over the coming weeks.

As with any technology, it’s always best to see how it performs in day-to-day use rather than just relying on the specification sheet.

I’ll provide an honest review and feedback once I’ve had chance to properly test it.

What's the best seat in your house?

For some people it's the favourite armchair.

For others it's the spot in the garden when the sun finally appears.

For me, it's often wherever friends and family naturally end up gathering.

The funny thing is that technology can play a surprisingly big role in that.

Not because anyone is interested in the technology itself.

Nobody talks about network switches.

Nobody gets excited about HDMI cables.

Nobody sits down and says, "What a fantastic access point."

What people remember is the experience.

Watching a cup final with friends.

Family film nights.

Summer barbecues with music playing in the background.

The rugby on a Saturday afternoon.

The Formula 1 on a Sunday.

The moments where everyone ends up in the same place.

The best technology tends to disappear into the background.

It just works.

The music is there.

The picture is great.

The WiFi doesn't let you down.

And people can focus on spending time together rather than fighting with remotes, apps and settings.

Technology doesn't create those moments.

But when it's done properly, it certainly helps them happen.

So, a Friday question...

What's the best seat in your house, and why?

When school WiFi works, nobody notices.

When it doesn't, everybody notices.
Lessons are disrupted.
Teachers can't access resources.
Students lose focus.
Online assessments become stressful.
And IT teams suddenly find themselves dealing with a queue of complaints.

The challenge is that school networks are being asked to do more than ever before.
Classroom devices.
Interactive displays.
Staff laptops.
Cloud-based learning platforms.
VoIP phones.
CCTV.
Door access systems.
Guest networks.
Safeguarding and filtering systems.
All competing for bandwidth and network resources.

The result is that a network which worked perfectly well a few years ago can quickly become a bottleneck.

We often hear schools talking about broadband speed, but in many cases the issue isn't the internet connection.
It's the infrastructure inside the building.
Coverage gaps.
Poorly located access points.
Ageing network hardware.
Buildings that have evolved over time without the network evolving with them.
Reliable technology is no longer a luxury in education.
It is part of the learning environment.

When the network works properly, teachers can teach, students can learn and technology becomes an asset rather than a frustration.

That's exactly how it should be.

Why does the WiFi always fail in the meeting room?

It's a strange phenomenon.
The WiFi works perfectly at your desk.
It works in the kitchen.
It works in reception.

Then five minutes before an important Teams meeting, it suddenly falls apart.
The video freezes.
The screen share lags.
People start turning cameras off.
Someone suggests using a mobile hotspot.
Everyone wastes ten minutes trying to make technology do what it should have done in the first place.

The reality is that meeting rooms often expose weaknesses in a network that go unnoticed elsewhere.
A Teams or Zoom call places very different demands on a network compared to checking emails or browsing the web.

Add multiple laptops, wireless presentations, video conferencing equipment and a room full of connected devices, and the cracks start to show.

Common issues we see include:
• Poor WiFi coverage in meeting rooms
• Access points installed in the wrong locations
• Network equipment that has never been reviewed since the office moved in
• Video conferencing systems sharing overloaded networks
• Lack of wired connections where they would help most

The frustrating part is that most of these issues are entirely preventable.
A reliable meeting room is not just about the screen or camera.
It is about the network infrastructure behind it.

When the network is designed properly, meetings start on time, calls remain stable and staff can focus on the discussion instead of troubleshooting technology.

Which is exactly how it should be.

The World Cup deserves more than a tiny TV in the corner of the room.
Every tournament we see the same thing.
Friends crowded around a screen.
Someone standing in front of it.

The WiFi buffering at the worst possible moment.
And one person loudly explaining the offside rule.

If you’re serious about watching the World Cup properly, the setup matters more than you might think.

A proper home cinema or media room can turn match night into something far closer to the stadium experience:
• A big screen that actually does the game justice
• Smooth motion so the ball doesn’t blur across the pitch
• Proper surround sound so you hear the crowd, commentary and atmosphere
• Lighting scenes that take the room from normal to match mode instantly
• Comfortable seating so nobody ends up watching from the floor

Press one button and the lights dim, the screen drops and the match kicks off.

Suddenly everyone wants to watch the football at your house.

Just be warned… once friends and family see the setup, you may end up hosting every match.
